Greetings from San Antonio, TX
I have a basic interest in martial arts. In my second job, I work as Deputy Constable and I'm looking for some additional self-defense "tools" to help make sure I come home safely at the end of my shift.
I thought I would check this site out for a couple of reasons. First, my limited understanding of Kenpo gives me the impression that it is better suited for what I'm after than some of the other disciplines. Do any of the trainers in San Antonio offer classes designed for some specific self defense training geared for police officers?
Secondly, a friend of mine that I have lost touch with is a member here. I thought this could be a good opportunity to learn a thing or two, and reconnect with my friend at the same time.
So, Dan... Dan Farmer (sigung86), are you out there?? Donna and I finally moved out of the cold MT climate to a warmer one.
[note: if Dan responds to this, I must warn you all that you will be subjected to cow-tippin jokes/stories between us]

Welcome and I'm looking forward to hearing the stories.
I'm not familiar with San Antonio Kenpo, but Mr Bill Piper runs Texas Storm Kenpo in Ft Worth.
I now it is not around the corner, but he is a retired police officer, has good ideas on teaching Kenpo and he will be happy to talk with you so it would be worth the trip now and again.

Welcome. Dan is still around. If you do a search, you can find one of his posts and send him a private message.
God gave us 2 ears and 1 mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak.
Unfortunantly, he gave us 2 eyes and 10 fingers, which explains the problems we get on the internet.~Zoran

I have no idea about the quality of Kenpo in San Antonio, but if you don't like what you find in Kenpo, try looking at the Kali groups in the area.

This is a starting point, there are others.
Like everything else, quality is dependent on the instructor.

Welcome to KT! It looks like there's no shortage of Kenpo schools in the San Antonio area. See who's close and what they offer. One KT member to check in on for advice here would be Doc Chap'el. IMHO. Again, welcome. -Bob

Hi John and Hello to the lovely Donna...
I tried a couple of times to get a message to you, but you account won't accept a message from me here on KT.
A couple of things... This is, without a doubt, the best and most informative Kenpo Site on the web. They even keep a cranky old butthead like me on the roster.
The other thing:
For Kenpo in San Antonio - American Kenpo:
[American Kenpo Karate
American Kenpo Karate
5440 Babcock Rd
San Antonio TX 78240
Curtis Abernathy - He probably won't remember me as it's been a number of years, but you can tell him that I sent you.
I would also suggest Gary Swan, but he's all the way in Universal City.
Love to Donna and Hello to you. rofl!

Thank you all for the warm welcome
Glad to hear from Dan again as well. I've been trying to catch up with him for quite some time now. Thanks for the contact info DanI got your last PM and sent you a reply. Hopefully that one makes it through.
We live in NE San Antonio, so Universal City is less than 10 minutes away. Babcock is a little further away, but not terribly so.
Things are different here in TX. Those longhorns make it alot more difficult for cow tippin

I'd like to invite you to come check out the Jeff Speakman's Kenpo 5.0 off Culebra near 1604. It sounds like it's not just "right around the corner" but, the drive from I-10 and 1604 takes me about 15-20 minutes on average. I do drive from more than an hour away (Kerrville).
I evaluated 3 of the Kenpo schools there in San Antonio and found this to be my preferred option even though it is a bit more of a drive for me.
They just added an additional 5,000 square feet of space (total of 7000)and we have a few husband/wife groups who attend regularly.
The website with all the contact information is www.jeffspeakmantexas.com
I will also send you a PM with my contact information should you have any questions I might be able to answer. Either way, I'd love to have you stop by as my guest and check out the class.
Good luck in your search...it pays to check out all your options.

I agree with you… these damn longhorns must know some kenpo. That, plus those long horns on some of them, make cow tippin a mite more entertaining down here. TX folks also like their shotguns. A little rock salt in the air also makes for a more invigorating evening of cow tippin. But I digress… or is it regress....
