Catch Phrases

What are some of your best phrases that you either use as an instructor or have heard in class and stuck in your mind.

Some of my favorites are:

1. "If someone puts their hands on you, you put your hands on them."
2. "Keep your friends close and keep your enemies closer" (teaching students to keep the opponents close to them.)
3. "There is no hopping in kenpo".
4. "Anything that touches your body is yours to keep." (re-grabbing)


I have more of them, but I'll have to think. Let's hear some of yours.

Somehow, miraculously, he's still standing, and that offends me.....

I usually say "If it was easy we would call it Tae Kwon Do" when people start complaining about the difficulty of something I am teaching.

It is better to give then receive.

"that won't leave a mark, but it will make an impression"

keep 'em comin'. Those are GREAT!

Ouch! I love that one Rob, LOL.

I was talking to the students doing long 1 and we were talking about the transitional inward blocks.

They wanted to know why, so I said, "Just in case, block you face."

A good rule of thumb.

“You can’t externalize Kenpo until you internalize Kenpo”

Those are two that my instructor uses that stand out in my mind

There are transitory inward blocks throughout the first two thirds of the kata. :)

I actually prefer something that I heard Tony Blauer say once, that: "Practice doesn't make perfect, Perfect practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes you better and better is where it's at."

Your signature 'to feel is to believe' is a good catch phrase too. :)

I had one instructor who used to say, "Bruises built character."

I never thought I wanted a bruised character, so I didn't buy into that one.

The other night we were practicing defenses against a rear bear hug attack with the arms pinned. The students didn't have enough "attitude" for me and were kind of lazy about the way they were executing the techniques and weren't really convincing me that they did not want the attacker to let go so I asked, "What is this? Broke-Back Kenpo?" That did the trick. :D

I've heard it as, "It's not what you show, it's what you know that counts." but it's the same meaning.

I love the 'broke-back kenpo' comment. Funny.
