    Default Shaolin Kempo curriculum

I was wondering what the breakdown is for the Shaolin Kempo curriculum through first black?

What forms/katas/combos are taught at each level? I realize some of the kempos, animal techs etc. might be unique to a particular school but I was wondering about the other things.

    Pinans 1-5
    Katas 1-6
    Statu(r)e of the Crane
Two-Man Fist Set (North and South)
    The Blocking Sets
    Combos
Any other forms taught at 1st black?

Ours is slightly different than the norm, but here ya go:

    to get to Black:
    pinana 1-5
    kata 1-5
    Stature of the Crane
8 (stationary and moving), 10, 16 blocking sets
    26 empty-hand techniques
    15 grab techniques
    10 gun techniques
    10 knife techniques
    10 club techniques
    Basics of groundfighting

    at black you get
    2 man set
    all techniques mirror imaged
Seisan kata (although I beleive we are going to drop that now that we are no longer associated with Geary, and replace with either Hakutsuru Mei or Naihanchi Shodan, still an open question)

Davids is pretty right on up to Black. At 1st black normally you receive 6 kata and Hansuki for forms, and one weapons form (normally of your choice) defensive manuevers or combos are 22, 23, 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 (basicly catching you up for 1-30).

Thanks, for the responses. It seems that there is some variance between schools on what is taught.

I have seen some curriculum that does not have any of the pinans, and others that only include some of the pinans. Some teach Hansuki later (2nd degree) and others at 1st black.

Are the combos that are taught at each belt level usually about the same? Such as #6, 7 are first?

Again, there is no "set" teaching order within the system although most are similar. I have seen green belt forms taught at black belt (statue of the crane) I have seen blue belt forms taught at yellow (1 kata) it all vary's school to school and on what the instructors strengths, weaknesses and goals for himself and his students are.

    Just a question:
I was taught the Pinan Kata (1-5) when I studied Okinawan Karate. I enjoyed them too.

I was just wondering why SK distinguishes between the Pinan ((I don't think that an 's' makes it plural, .....I could be wrong)) and kata.... as the Pinan ARE kata.

    Thank you

More than likely becuase they have #d kata and then they have the pinans, two completely different set of forms.

it's just a naming convention for 2 series of forms. Sometimes we refer to the "kata" series as the "Pesare kata" even though that is not 100% accurate, historically.

That was how I have understood it from various readings. The "pinans" are named that because they are loosely based on the original pinans and the "katas" are mostly from Presare or one of his branches.
