Dear Kenpo brothers and sisters:
What do you consider to be your most effective punching technique?
Please nore that I'm talking about punching techniques NOT eye strikes or rakes, groin grabs, etc., etc..
My most effective punch is the straight right hand. What is yours?

There are NONE if the elements of mass, speed, weapons' impact zone, targeting, breathing, closing gap, blab, blab, blab are not also taken into account.
Technique still implies a combination so "Leopard Movement" takes first place. It's a lead hand Sun punch to the nose (on Zero Perception) and then a full power Reverse punch (more the boxer's type and NOT the Kenpo type) with hip rotation, body shift, body drop, and forward weight transference to the best effective open target, which is the throat. Unfortunately I suggest no one do it.
The above basic takes into consideration closing gap, covertness, Zones of perceptual blindness, setups, blab, blab, blab.

Im a fan of the right cross myself, but i guess more importantly, its whatever scores the target..right ? lol

lead hand backnuckle. it's fast, the closest weapon to target usually, and the power/effectiveness is decieving.

Dear Kenpo brothers and sisters:
I liked the comment about the lead hand backnuckle. I remember as a teen the first time in a light contact sparring match when I layed a backnuckle on a 230 pound rough, tough farm boy. The move stopped him in his tracks as a slight trickle of blood ran from his nostrils. A feather could have knocked him down at that point.
Other times I have been had knots put on my head and been rendered nearly senseless by rotating back fists or the dreaded Korean "secret" weapon the reverse spinning backnuckle. Ouch!!
Thanks for reminding me of the power of this move.
I still prefer the application of the straight right hand/cross. I remember when I taught my 12 year old daughter to perform this move effectively and she learned she could buckle the knees of a full grown man. It was hilarious to see the guys get knocked on their butts when we sparred with protective gear.

Ever see the hop-skip-anda jump used by Olympic javelin throwers? That footwork, used to close distance and power into a rear hand right, with the action of the arm looking a bit like a baseball pitch. Lots of good power generation, and it makes the sound of a ballbat whacking a coconut on contact.
Ugly stuff, but somehow beautiful.

Dear Brad:
Interestingly enough some Korean MA associations no longer teach the reverse backnuckle! Too difficult to control they say. The funny thing about it is they still do their "Tornado" and "Ax" kicks with very little control that I can see.

Nice post, and...
I agree and I disagree.
Here's why.
This is about the most effective punch, and a backknuckle is NOT a punch.
I do agree with your other points...
1. it's fast
2. It's "normally" the closest weapon to the target
3. I also agree it's deceiving
I do not agree that it is a man stopper.
I do agree that it is a confusion tactic so you can then do whatever else you want to do.
It does enter on the line of Zero Perception when done correctly.
And, I stopped teaching the backknuckle with a closed fist many a year ago. Closing the fist makes it slow, even if it is not clenched tightly when in comparison to other, better ways.

Targeting effectively with a backknuckle is the only thing that makes it effective.
A backknuckle to the nose is very effective. It's a very sensitive target.
Many nerves there, especially just below on the philtrum. Two sets of nerves for both sides of the face.
Also the nose is a sensitive hollow organ. NOT a dangerous strike but defintively a confusion strike.
Thank you for bringing that specific target Nelson.

Dear Kenpotex:
We had a past thread on the very subject you brought up, the sucker punch!
You might want to check it out.
