    Default black belt pomotions

I was to believe their is only one 10th degree and that was Ed. So my question is, how do black belts acheive rankings above 3rd black. what special training required and number of years as a student? are their forms, techniques, new freestyle moves....

this is very confusing to me. i've seen so many 10th degree black belts how can this be?

when Ed passed away highest rank was 7th degree and some names below:

    larry tatum
    craig McCoy
    steve labounty
    tom kelly
    gilbert velez

now do you understand my dilemma .

    some 10th degreed:
    al tracy
    joe palanzo
    huk planas
    chuck sullivan
    michael pick
    nick cerio

these men have all been in black belt magazine and other publications or mentioned on line as such.

another kenpoist asked question awhile back with no definitive answer "how can I be sure my teacher is who they say they are" We are not trying to be disrespectful, just need clarification

all universities which confer upon undergraduate,master,PhD... must have written thesis at all levels,be published in many distinquished forums.

therefore as a 10th It would be equivalent to a universities PhD, or am I mistaken. would you agree Ethically it would be discraceful for a PhD to anoint himself, and adverse repercussions loss of tenure, rescind title awarded...

so my question now is, are their adverse repercussions for self promotions, promotion by students,cronies... I pray some reputable senior black belt will respond, let's have a truth reconcilliation talk on line

I would take much favor in response from 3rd degree or higher black belts such as professor Dian tanaka ,Mills crenshaw, Jim tracy...

    thank you

Sheesh...aren't you the efficient scribe. Most impressive that you did the research to track down all of these links. Nicely done.

In our system? We have this Spinner, (I suspect it used to be used for a Twister game)...Rank is placed randomly about the circle and we spin the spinner and allow fate to determine where the arrow falls and decrees our rank.

Oh no wait. I'm sorry. That's the OTHER schools in town. My mistake.

In my own, ofttimes not-so-humble opion....

The higher ranks, 5th and above, should be determined by a number of factors. Time and experience being but part of that equation. Contributions back to the art, in terms of developing greater understanding of existing principals and ways of relaying them to others, developement of new materiels and ideas that help fascillitate the growth and continuation of the art itself. This should take into account one's students and their abilities and accomplishments as well. Time alone, is not enough. Some systems, the clock begins ticking when you obtain your shodan and degrees are automatically added as the sands of time continue to fall. To me, this is not nearly enough.

What our focus should be, is not how many stripes adorn our belts, but what have I done, to further develope and spread this collective knowledge, that is the art of Kenpo?

What I think is rediculous are people who claim legitimate PhD's in martial arts.

LOL. How do you feel about Associates, Bachelors, or Masters?
