Default Studio Owners Sparring with Students

Does the head instructor of your school spar with students? If yes, how often?

Or, if you are the head instructor, do you spar with your students?

Note I am not talking about just black belt instructors here, but rather the studio owner him/herself.

I used to go teach the sparring class once a month. However, then I pulled my hamstring and that obviously had to go on the back burner. As far as the sparring goes I'll spar with anyone. The head instructor I'm not so sure if he spar's with people however.

    Interesting.

How about EVERYONE else? Does the HEAD INSTRUCTOR of your school spar his/her students?

Or if you are reading this, and you own your own school, do you spar your students regularly?

The reason why he may not be participating in the sparring class is because he is teaching his own classes in the seperate room. Either private lessons or group classes. I taught the sparring class last week for the first time in over a year and I think he was his own teaching classes.

I spar my students when we have sparring nights.

I am the first to admit we don't spar that often because the majority of the students are low belts, and I want them to have more control so people don't get hurt. I would rather them work techniques in the beginning to build a vocabulary of motion before we do a lot of sparring. When spar it is usually 5 rounds of 2 minutes per person against various opponents.

I've been to/spared with several schools, Kenpo and otherwise, and in every one of them all the instructors, and owners, spared with us. Sparing is a training tool, just like everything else, and they all used the opportunity to push students a little and expose us to new or different things. All tried to get us to use good technique and work basics as we spared. I don't remember any one taking cheap shots on less experienced fighters to impress us. They all fought us at our level, sometimes even taking the hits and "loosing" to let us work our offense.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but this attitude and aproach seems to me to be pretty universal. I never thought it was done any other way. I will say that the best at going at it hard, "giving what you get and getting what you give", and pure pain and fun, have been the Kali guys (at least in my experience). But the Kenpo schools do all right in that respect.

I'm no where near being an instructor, but my opinion is that, done right, sparing is an excellant training method for all levels. And the only way we are going to learn to apply what we learn is- to apply it.

Tuesday is our sparring night, one hour, and virtually every night (9/10) Jim (The Head Instructor) is out on the floor with us.

But then we are a small part-time school, this is part of his training too.

I like the atmosphere of smaller schools, and I really don't like schools where instructors are too good to glove up to fight with or be a crash dummy for the students.

    Exactly, I agree completely.

I push my students to their limit, but I also know it is humbling to take a few shots in the head here and there from my students as well.

There are way too many instructors out there with way too big of ego's that fighting students or other instructors could expose a weakness in their skill level.

We don't spar nearly as much as I'd like. But when we do, I spar with other students.

I prefer to spar with people better than me. You are right that it makes for a good humbling session. It keeps people on their toes and keeps them in check. I got my *** kicked on a regular basis (actually it was every class) when I trained with my first martial arts instructor. I kinda miss the old days of training in a garage and only those who truely wanted to train was there. All ego's were checked at the door of the garage.

It's sparadic. We don't have a pre-set spar day or anything (though I'd like to have one.) I tried forming a "club" specifically geared towards it but there was little or no interest from the students...so.. it didn't happen. I still try to get some in at least once a week. When I can I have the students (and myself) do 2 minute rounds against each other.

I just bought some new gear and it needs to be broken in.... so any of our students out there reading this...be ready...there's more sparring on the way!

I've sparred against CC and I loved it. Certainly takes you back down a notch or two when you think you might be getting good .

Spar nights at my home school up in Redding are Thursdays after class for an hour- the owner/instructor is out there every spar night if he's not teaching a private lesson or otherwise busy.

Mr. Hatfield still comes in and spars periodically. Personally I'll spar anyone who comes to class and make it a point to get some one on one time in with everyone.

I thought that he told me a while ago that he tries to get in but I wasn't sure. Last week or the week before (whichever) I tried to give Robert a little more but ran out of time. I felt kinda bad that he had to wait until the end but I didn't think anyone else there would be anywhere close to his level. Hatfield said to stop the class and wrap it up, hopefully Robert didn't feel cheated.
Maybe I'll see if I can get in again next month. It'll probably be more towards the end. Actually I'm going to pick a date and if we forecast it ahead hopefully we can get some to turn out.

I was talking to a student not long ago and he has never seen his Sensei spar{ a non Kenpo school by the way} and I couldn't believe it. I do know that when I have my own students ,I will do as Jamie does with us and be on the mat and participate in everything from warmups to sparring. I think the students benifit and it keeps you in shape and as we get older we can't afford not to.
