    Default Another Giant Leap... Purple!

After many months of study, Wednesday night I tested for and received my purple belt, closing for me this chapter as a "beginner" student and taking me into another leg of this great journey.

This had to be one the most fun and educational tests I've ever been through. My instructor Erik Akutagawa led a testing panel consisting of Mr. Ray Doss, Mr. Manny Martinez, and Sensei Joel Jiminez, and each took an active part in the testing process, asking important questions about the combos and techs we were asked to perform, and even jumping in and showing us key pointers. These men were so knowledgeable that our test went about an hour over what it normally would have taken... the test kind of turned into a mini class/seminar at times... but there was just so much sharing and learning that time just took a back seat.

As always, I have to shout out the other people in class who also tested and were promoted, Mark and Bill who both received their yellow belts. Another classmate Ben was supposed to test for purple along with me, but he suffered a rib fracture a couple weeks ago and has to sit out for a couple months. But I know once he's well, he'll get his belt as well.

So now I'm considered an intermediate student in this art of kenpo... and I'm ready to step up to the next challenges.

Congratulations!! You and I can encourage and motivate each other as we move up the ranks together, but in different locales. You be the L.A. purple belt and I'll be the S.A. purple belt.

Way to go! Revel and knuckle down for the next leg of study...

As much info as was passed around that night, it's clear that you definitely speak the truth... every time I learn new stuff, I also realize that there's so much more I don't know.

Good work, my friend. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you really have a tough road ahead. Blue belt is rough, and Green is when most students quit. I am in Brown at the moment and at times it seems I'm in pergatoury. I'd love to strap on the Black, but I realize that rank isn't so important. I'd rather move well for my rank and move up when I'm "pressed". I'm proud of you tho, and I hope you keep crankin' it out!

It makes some sense that many people quit around this time, after all things are getting more serious at this point. As my instructor says, the system itself will weed out the not-so-serious from the serious.

Don't worry about me though... barring any unforseen circumstance or act of God, I'm in it for the long haul.

The reason for the drop off is that you have already been shown and have a basic understanding of the art at purple. The confidence that you can take that info and make yourself a quasi-black belt is what kills your training.

Wouldn't or couldn't have anything to do with diminished expectations based on the reality of the... er... reality? The length of the time required vs the wonderful Western penchant for patience, and/or the quality of the instructor plus his/her abilities to overcome these issues in a mass marketing situation that most schools have become, nowadays? <Gotta remember to breathe once in a while>...

Same kind of problems since just about day one with Karate schools here in the US. It used to go so far as to cause great issue with collections and courts and such, when people were required to sign long term contracts, then either through short attention spans, loss of jobs, lack of funding, or a sudden realization that work is required as opposed to simply sucking it up while asleep, or for whatever reason, those same contracts were pursued through courts, etc.

It does, also seem kind of interesting that we are so quick to lay a purple belt drop off directly at the foot of the student, and not look to the instructors for some of the issues. I am reminded of an old cartoon strip from when I was a youngster, Pogo, in which was opined...

"We has met the enemy and he is us".

    Just a thought.
