    Default Orange to Purple...

...with Blue looming over the distant horizon.

I was kicked in for a purple belt last night despite an injury that has me hobbling about and whining like a really grouchy old man. But, then I can only smile. It's something I consider a worth while sacrifice to get to study and practice kenpo. Everything has its price.

I suppose I should go see a doctor but, for now I'll revel in having gained my instructor's confidence that allows me to tie on the next level of training. I am truly blessed with excellent instructors. One is an iron worker kenpoist and the other is a watch maker kenpoist. It's such a benefit to have both available.

I do want to extend my sincerest thanks to my brothers and sisters who are members of this, the planet's best kenpo forum. You make learning Kenpo a daily discipline and keep things fresh and enjoyable.

    God bless,
    ~Bill Richardson

I am new to kenpo in the ICKA. I put in for my orange, but I have to have shoulder surgery in about two weeks. It is great to hear stories of such perserverence. I have been practicing and teaching in the martial arts for about 20 years, but this has really limited my participation.

Thank you for the inspiration, Scott

Seriously, Congrats Brother, and you'll get no cup check from me, unlike my younger, but better looking brother Brad.

I'm just stubborn and will likely think fondly of my years of training from an automated wheel chair when in my old(er) age. I train against the advise of a neurosurgeon who did my back surgery a few years ago. I think I'd much rather be dead than to not be able to live.

So, I'd say to anyone who asks me, make up your own mind on the value of training after injury. Listen to your body and always give yourself adequate time to heal lest you'll just have more time out. All that said, let your spirit dictate your path. The good thing about pain is that it let's you know you're not dead yet.

Also know that I am equally inspired by the members of this board who put so much time, energy, and heart into the great art of Kenpo. I am truly blessed to be associated with the members of KenpoTalk.

    Peace,
    ~Bill Richardson

Actually, a foot is too slow... We used to walk by and hit 'em with a palm heel. Wish I could live back in San Antonio, again. That's a wonderful place, and it used to be chock full of Chinese community with lots of "Kung fu" brothers and sisters. As I get older, my memory slips about what I may have said earlier. I believe I may have already mentioned that back in those halcyon days, I had a friend who owned a Chinese Restaurant and was a Tong enforcer.

San Antonio has a very good Shaolin school taught by a bonafide monk from China. We've had the school come in and do demo's for grappling tournaments we have in San Antonio and Kerrville...when they had them in Kerrville. Those guys are always a treat to watch.
