I enjoyed the movie a lot. You can't miss with Jackie Chan. I was impressed with his dramatic skills. And the boy looks so much like his dad, that's it's just plain cute. He did a good job acting too -- much better than his mother. She brings pretty much nothing to the screen. (His real mom, not the movie mom.)

I liked the concept that 'it's in everything you do.' True for kenpo as well, if you want it to be.

As with the other movie though, to be that good that fast is beyond unbelievable. I don't care what the motivation is. Isn't gonna happen.

    Good overall though.

No noticeable impact on our class though.

Oh we always bet McFlurries on it. She once was told she'd get a McFlurry-one for the left side, one for the right side and one for the top of the head. She did all three targets in one shot. The poor guy (14 year old) kinda stood there in shock. She's a kicker for sure.

Did anyone catch the Ed Parker references in this movie? Maybe it is just me but I picked up on a couple of things.

The main character's name, played by Jaden Smith, is Dre Parker.

Dre Parker, could that be an homage to Mr. Parker as in Dr. E. Parker? (As in how people refer to Kwai Sun Chow as Professor Chow. Are they referring to Ed Parker as Dr. Parker?)

Also, Dre Parker's mother, played by Taraji Henson, is Sherry Parker. (One of Ed Parker's daughters is named Sheri.)

And the final scene takes place at the Tournament of Champions where the digital scoreboard is flanked by a "tiger and dragon".

Ehh the name is possible, I'd be interested in finding the background with the writers and see if there are any ties to Kenpo... but the Dragon and Tiger is pretty much Ubiquitous with many martial arts.

All in all, not a fan of the movie. Jackie Chan is exceptional as usual but the rest of the players were largely wooden and uninspiring. The writing lacked depth and the one meaningfull scene (destruction of the car) was just ruined by it turning that tragic moment into a training session. Yes I understand the narrative device they were trying to use with the student training the master, and the redirection of intent, and the commentary of the arts refocusing ones life bla bla bla... just so poorly written..

I liked the movie. And some of the fighting and training scenes did make me think of Kenpo for some reason, although it was a little hard to put a finger on it. Other than the fact that Parker Kenpo does have a distinct Chinese touch, of course.

Not to my knowledge; however, this is an interesting interpretation. While 'Parker' was an obvious parallel, I didn't really think about the main character's first name.

Also, Dre Parker's mother, played by Taraji Henson, is Sherry Parker. (One of Ed Parker's daughters is named Sheri.)
    That's a really good catch!

While not exclusive to Kenpo (as the Bunny already said), the two are its characteristic symbol, to be sure.

Would be interesting to figure out if there are yet more possible Kenpo overtones to the movie.

I agree, I was kind of "eeeh" when I first heard about it and then watched the trailer and it really looks good.

I know, I was worried that they wouldn't take the story seriously or they would make these new episodes look kind of goofy or something.

But it actually looks pretty awesome.

    Did you guys watch it?

    It was awesome!

The first two episodes are on regular YouTube and then after that you have to sign up for YouTube Red to watch the other 8 episodes.

But YouTube Red is free for a month and you can cancel it anytime in that month.

It has been so popular they already announced Cobra Kai season 2 will be out in 2019.

Yes, it was surprisingly good; I actually binge-watched eight of the ten episodes.

I rather like the way the series avoids stereotypical good/bad characterisation of the main roles and explores their respective backgrounds in depth. I hope it will continue that way.

Mr. Miyagi is certainly missed, even though Daniel LaRusso tries his best to get some eastern philosophy rolling towards the end of the first season. I am looking forward to seeing how that topic will (hopefully) be developed further as well.

Friends of the original Karate Kid movies don't want to miss this show...

I really like it as well. The second season will be released spring of next year I believe.

I liked how it showed the other side of Johnny and his perspective. Also, kind of the duality that neither one is all good or all bad.
