Hi, Would you mind if I shared my personal experience on choosing a school?
In my mid 40s, following a divorce, my Xwife signed my 5 year old son up at the closest martial arts school to her house. I think she mostly did it since I was a life long soccer player and was intent on putting him on a team and coaching. After about a month of sulking while I watched my 5 year in the classes, sensei came by and chatted me up. The next day I put on a gi and a white belt. That was eight years ago and I've been training 3-5 times a week since then.
I love my school but frankly, one of the things that I like about it is that its 6 minutes from my house. It's also a spectacularly well-run dojo and I have had, at times, all three of my kids there too.
I'm not sure that there's a morale to this story other than when life serves up lemons, make some lemonade. And that many people are flexible in their goals and habits.
