Room $25 each man got $1 back (25+3) =28 + $2 for bell hop = $30
Three (3) business men rent a hotel room for the night. The clerk tells them the room will cost them $30.00.
To keep it fair, they each give the clerk $10.00 each (10 x 3 =30) and head up to their room.
Later, the clerk realizes that he overcharged them for the room. It should have only been $25.00 so he gives the bell hop $5.00 to give back to the 3 men. (30-25=5)
Still with me? Good.
On the way up, the bell hop realizes that he can not evenly distribute 5 one dollar bills among 3 men, so he pockets $2.00 and gives each man back $1.00. (5-2=3)
If each man initially spent $10.00 a piece and got back $1.00 how much did they each wind up spending? (10-1=9) So each man's out of pocket expense was ultimately $9.00. Basic math, right?
O.K.
There were 3 men, So what is the total out of pocket expense for all 3? Each spent $9.00 and there are 3 of them so (3X9=27). Again, basic math. The total is $27.00.
Remember how much the bell hop pocketed? It was $2.00. What is the total of $27.00 + the $2.00 the bell hop put in his pocket? (27+2=29)
Now tell me, what happend to the other dollar????

It was given to an exterminator because any hotel that only costs $30 for 3 folks is bound to be infested with rats & roaches.
This is good. Give me a minute and I'll figure this out for real.

I think it's Big Brother. He came and took that dollar along with my tax return!

I guess everyone has had ample opportunity to review this and reply at this point so I'll go ahead and give you all the answer.
It's not a math problem. It's an excercise in the use of language. The use of "math" is a misdirection, and the way the "problem" is worded is meant to confuse.
The point of the excercise is to show how language can be manipulated so that the truth is distorted, and even though you know that the "message" is wrong, the data presented may make it appear to actually be true on the surface and even fool some into doubting themselves and what they know to be true.
-Food for thought.
