Default I almost took a guy out at Wal-Mart this weekend

Well I almost took a guy out at Wal-Mart this weekend. I had just finished walking around and around the store with my wife and kids. (That always takes forever) but anyway we walked to the car and I noticed that a large van had parked next to her car between us and the store. This effectively blocked my view from the right but also blocked the store cameras from seeing us as well. My wife and kids got into the car my wife in the driverís seat as I placed our junk in the trunk and closed the trunk. Well I donít smoke in her car and after what seemed like forever in the store I had to have one so I reached in and took out my pack and left the passenger door cracked so I could still hear my wife talking to me. Well as I was kneeled down talking and smoking outside the car I saw a large shadow cover my side of the car from behind me. I still donít know how I did it but I jumped up and did a 180 in the air and landed in a neutral bow facing this poor Hispanic guy that hardly spoke English. I was ready to go to war with this person that came up on my blind side. This guy backed up about 10 feet real fast and was doing his best to explain in half English and half Spanish that the van next to us was his. And that I had his driverís side door blocked. I felt bad that I scared the crap out of him but I promise you the feeling was mutual. My wife said it was the wildest thing she had ever seen. One second I was kneeling down facing her and talking the next I was two feet away staring down some stranger. I guess the moral of this is that itís my own fault for leaving myself in such a vulnerable position and dropping my guard for even a second. And also that all this Kenpo training is paying off for something.

Glad it turned out to be nothing. Maybe next time the guy will try a verbal hello before coming up on someone.

Good story! It's nice to know the training is kicking in.

I had a friend of mine who had a key to my apartment. I was taking a nap and she stopped by. She knocked and when I didn't answer, she came in. (We were best friends, so that was not terribly unusual.)

I was dead asleep when I heard a noise and saw a dark shape in my doorway. (She's 5'10 btw)

I woke with a start, pushed up in my bed and assumed a guarded ground defense.

She started saying, "It's just me. It's just me."

Scared the boogers right out of me.

Nice to know I know kenpo in my sleep though.

Good thing it didnt lead to any violence,
on both parts. its pretty cool how we can react on instinct.
but while you were in your stance and ready to strike what if this fellow (i am hispanic also lol) Chicano pulled out a weapon? We're not invincible
even if we do have training...Good story nonetheless,

Good job. There are probably quite a few "what if's" but the most important is "what if he was an attacker and you did nothing"?

Better to be safe than sorry. That guy will think twice before approaching someone unannounced.

You should be ashamed of yourself scaring that poor fella like that.
At least you were aware enough to notice the shadow.

CC just think of what would've happened if he'd been pumping gas!

Anyways - good job at being alert.

Situational awareness cannot be stressed enough. Good job on noticing someone approaching. But I want to point something out.

I view situational awareness as having two categories, immediate and imminent. You dealt with the immediate, but didn't think about the imminent.

I feel it was a bad decision to stop and smoke right there. You were aware that the van blocked view from the store, it also sounds like it left you in a fairly confined space, in short two things I would want to avoid. Just like when driving you are taught to 'drive ahead' looking out for obstructions/hazards coming up in the road same should go for situational awareness.

Not a good idea when smoking a cigarette.

on the same idea, when I was a teenager(LONG AGO) my Dumbass cousin hid in a dark corner of our Basement(4 family house everyone Family living there) and as I walked past he jumped out and got himself a bloody nose for his trouble, didn't even think my fist just came from the hip to his nose CRACK! Had to be one of his Dumber ideas as I'd just finished punching a speedbag for about 30 minutes which I guess is how he knew I'd be coming by. Had no idea who it was till after the hit , needless to say he NEVER tried that foolishness again on anyone.

    Skennen Peace.
