Default Masters, Grand Masters and Senior Grand Masters where will it end ?

I've seen more references to grandmasters and senior grandmasters this year at any time in my lifetime in the martial arts.
With the proliferation of 10th Dans it seems like somebody is always wanting to one up another to get top billing.
The ad postings make it look like the carnival has come to town !
Who designates these folks as the grand ultimate in the martial arts ?
What do you all think about this ?

    Honestly, I don't.

Whatever people want to dowith their belt or rank or standing is XY or Z community has absolutely nothing to do with my training.

In the kenpo system that I train in, the testing goes from white belt through 5th dan, anything over 5th dan is based on time in the system and training.. The founder of the system died in 2006 and that pretty much put a hold on all promotions due to the fact the organization went by the way side. Although other instructors who trained with him prior to his death moved on to other systems, but still use the original name of the organization as it has been a major system in the Philippines for at least 50 yrs.

At the studio where I trained prior to the one I am at now, the owner/head instructor, who was a first degree black belt, referred to himself as Grandmaster because he owned a studio.

    Oh, I didn't know that. That's rich. Although ... I shouldn't be surprised.

Referring to yourself as any type of master immediately disqualifies you.

That's a great point EKC. I still wonder where the "grand" master title comes from ? In the grocery store grand muffins are puffed up the most.
Are "senior" grand masters old enough for medicare?
Are all 10th Dans automatically considered masters ? If so by whom ?

I personally do not address anyone as "Master".

I will call them Mr. Mrs. Sir. Mam.......

    I serve no master.....

I have not had any issue to date in this approach....

I've heard that Mr. Parker rejected the master title and proclaimed he had no master but Jesus Christ.

So are you allowed to use the title to refer to yourself after someone bestows it on you? What about all these silly kenpo titles for each black belt rank... ?

It's kind of like being declared "annointed" by a Pentecostal evangelist and his friends. You are then thought of as someone who is deemed closer to God by man which may or not be true.

In the martial arts many become followers but few leaders emerge. An example of a "good" master sensei or leader I would have to put Lee Wedlakes' name out there as he has contributed much to Parker kenpo and the martial arts in general.

Another names that comes to mind would be Ted Sumner who's association with Tracy kenpo has been long and honorable with many contrinutions in healing and PTSD treatments for vets along with long service as a law enforcement officer and undercover cop.

The list of who I consider as "bad" or bogus grand masters is longer but is of no interest to anyone but myself. They know who they are ! Lol

Of course the word "mister" is based on the word "master" so you are actually doing exactly the same thing and "sir" is from "sire"

Do what you want. I would never, as my teacher would never, as his teacher never would have.

Mr. Parker had it right. To my knowledge no man called him master until after he was dead and gone.

Mr. Parker had a file cabinet full of commendations, declarations, and certificates of awarded titles from various organizations. He thanked them kindly, and filed them away and never used any of them.

You know me Mark and how I don't like to be called those things either. When we go formal, we use simple American Courtesy.

OK so what you're telling me is, after 59 years in the art, and turning 70 next year, the best you got for me is ALMOST 49th degree? Like you couldn't throw the brother out that last 9/16? Comon Man! That's cold. I hereby demote you to dojo secretary, and will meet you in the parking lot at Walmart to sign the necessary documents on the hood of a car. So there!
