Interesting article by Lt.Col Dave Grossman, author of "On Killing." I believe that book was nominated for a Pulitzer...anyway...check it out.

Sheep Dog I have a Police Lt. who has used, and talked about these terms for years. I really like his theory.

Good article, but a little oversimplification on the boundaries and distinctions between the three groups. People can transition between, or coexist in these groups for a number of reasons. The best example of this is the militia in the US. As defined by our founders, it consists of every man who is armed and willing to fall out in defense of his country. The heroes on the flight that went down in Pennsylvania on 9-11 were militia, though armed only with courage, determination, and possibly improvised weapons at hand.

A lot of the sheep the article talks about have served in the armed forces, then went back to quiet lives. Others study martial arts, own firearms, or just plain have the moral fortitude to act. These "sheep" are still the first line of defense against crime, terror, or invasion- or any emergency. They respect the police and military, but understand that when something goes wrong it will usually be citizens on the scene that respond first.

There are definately far too many of the type of sheep that the author refers to around today. But there is an inherent danger in assigning this attitude to all or most "sheep"- and that is that it can foster an elitest attitude in the "sheep dogs" which can lead to abuses. Waco and Ruby Ridge are examples of the "sheep dogs" crossing the line to "wolves".

When sheep or shepherd hold the other in contempt, the wolves hold sway.

I hope Sigung reads this, it is interesting ... insulting to wolves I think, but a nice, if somewhat simplistic description of certain pieces of our society. I may have used a coyote or hyena instead of a wolf, or maybe insects that are cannabalistic for the sociopath or antisocial personality predator.
