From my (limmited) experience, the Tracy's seemed to go more with the Chinese methodology and concentrated more on flow. Mr. Parker worked more on things like structure, timeing, and letting the stance changes do the work.

I used to work one of their two man forms with my brother (I don't remember what it is called now), and it was awesome! Beautiful flow and a lot of circular motion. I still prefer EPAK, but they have some good stuff over on the dark side too!

My time with In the 2 showed me on the Parker side .
He told stories of some of the teachins--we had reverse as an answer.
We did lots of path vs line,he was very graphic & high tech with his
drawings & way to exspess the way to conture the body.

My time on Tracys side It was do as they do-shown the teching once fast & twice slow. They were go with history & pointing out their spot in it.

Jim Mitchell and I used to talk about this. Jim was one of my mentors when I was with the Portland studio and he was the owner of the Salem studio. Tracy’s was good Kenpo.

Then when I was running my Idaho Karate Kung-fu Association out of Boise, Jim came and visited me. He talked me into going to an Ed Parker seminar that he was hosting in Bend.

So I went and met the man.

Because of Mitchell, I joined the Ed Parker IKKA.

And, in our talks, we both finally decided that all the Kenpos came from Parker, and the Master Keys were the same, but from DIFFERENT time periods of Kenpo Karate development.

So, depending on the time period, late 50’s, late 60’s, late 70’s, late 80’s, the Kenpo you received training on could be different because of the evolution of the one teaching you.

    Our final consensus?

They ALL are VERY EFFECTIVE, when done according to the principles and the Master Keys of the time period.

I do love what Ed Parker did with Kenpo. I do love what Al Tracy has done for Kenpo. I do love what Jim Mitchell has shared with me over the years in both systems since I first met him in Salem in 1973.

Too bad that we are all in our mid 60’s to the low 70’s, or dead.
