    I say forms (kata) are very usefull, even to the begginer. Especially to the beginer. They teach the proper way to move for a given art. They help a student begin to understand an art before he has the proficiency to make it usable. For the more advanced students, it helps them keep in practice. You can't apply every day, you'll run out of ukes.

    Kata are the road maps to a system. Each Kata has a drirection of travel and along the way the student learns many faects about their particular art.
    Quality outweighs quantity every time.

    I agree with the first post. Without kata there is no karate. The forms are gifts and with time you will see endless possibilities.
