I read it last year for the first time. I think it is a great book for Kosho Ryu students.....both historically and philosophically.
    The drills are great.

I've looked for this book in the past. Would anyone know where to get it and find it at a affordable cost?

I've searched the internet for a copy......no dice.
If anyone knew what they were holding onto.......they would charge an exorbitant amount for it.

I paid a pretty good price for "what is self defense?"......it's a good book also, especially if you're a kosho student.

I was supplied a copy for research purposes not too long ago. I have very mixed feelings about the book. One one hand it is obviously written to appeal to prison authorities and its content is highly eccentric -- even kind of crazy. On the other hand some of the techniques are legitimate.

If you were to talk to Hanshi Juchnik about the book....Or go to a few kosho classes......the content might make more sense.

is that "what is true self defense?" or "what is self defense?"
I have an actual copy of the latter, but not the former.
I'm sure when thomas mitose re-releases it, he won't sell it to just anyone.

I have the latter in book form, the former as a photocopied manuscript that I had scanned into .pdf format. It will be interesting to compare Thomas' to his fathers.

I got mine from someone who has the book and made me a copy, but, obviously, the text is available to anyone who is willing to dig a little or ask the right people.

well, you can look at it 2 ways......read the book and forget that Mitose wrote it while in prison, or look at it the other way.
You either find the info pertinent and applicable or eccentric and a waste of time.
As for the drills.......if you practice them, they work.

Drills are funny that way. I have found the opposite to be true as well, if you don't practice them, they don't work.

Ray Arquilla tells a great story about the jumping patterns. Mitose told him to do them 100 times a day for 100 days. So he worked them a bit for a couple of weeks, then went in and asked Mitose how they were relevant. Mitose basically said, "Seriously, 100 times a day for 100 days, and don't even think of asking me that question until you have done it."

GM Arquilla said that he got serious about it, and after about 30 days, he no longer needed to ask the question.
