The Japanese Kempo style has it's roots in several Japanese arts including Goju-Shorei Karate, Jujitsu and Judo. The Japanese term Kempo (Alternatively Kenpo) is often translated as law of the fist, way of the fist, or law of the hard fist, it is the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese term: Chaun Fa (Mandarin) and Ken Fat (Cantonese) more commonly known as Gong Fu or Kung Fu.
Okinawan Kenpo is generally credited with the origins of kata as taught by most styles of Karate. In learning the different kata, the student is taught the various self defense techniques and applications. Intermediate and advanced students would begin training in the Kobudo (weapons) system once the basic material was mastered.
