Default Best Weapon to compete with

Thoughts of an upcoming tournament have got me thinking. What is your favourite weapon to compete with, regardless of the form. I love my staff form but find that most people compete with the staff at a tournament. This next tournament i am thinking Kama. I have the options of escrima, Bo, kama, nunchucka, and even possibly sai.

    What's your favourite?

I love the Sabre. It's very graceful but at the same time lightning powerful. I had the opportunity of learning this weapon when I studied Northern Shaolin Kung Fu more intently.

Saber is a great weapon, so is the Spear, Naginata, 3 Sectional Staff, or anything else that grabs your fancy.

I like the Saber or Tonfa but the Bo seems to be most popular in Tournaments.

This year at the tournament in Sarnia my students will be doing some different weapons. Sai, Hook Swords, Fan, and I haven't decided what I toy I will be pulling out that day.

    Good question!

At tournaments is seems to be about "Flashiness" (Is that a word?) so those skinny bo's, and Kama's with the cords for swinging seem popular... The Sai while one of my favorite weapons is difficult to do well with-

In Kara-Ho Kempo we have some unique weapons, my favorites (of what I have seen) being:

    Fan
    Chopsticks
    Balisong Knife
    Kama (Picture less swinging)
    Nunchaku

Of the weapons you mentioned I really like to watch the Kama, but I would choose the one you are best with

    Cheers!
The above is just my opinion.

My new favourite weapon is SAI. They are so far the most rewarding of the weapons I have worked with. I really like that they operate in their own distinct way and truly take skill to use. Skill I need to work a lot harder to get

Cane is a great weapon, I have never seen it do well in the weapons division, but I have seen it take first place n the self defense division.

    That's awesome Rob....can't wait.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, where did you learn these weapons?

The Chinese weapons such as Hooks swprds, fan, spear etc... I learned in Chicago. Back in 92 or 93 I met Mark Masterson of Chicago, and started to visit him and his brother Mike for a couple of years. I would visit them for a weekend once a month and train and sleep in their school friday, saturday, and then finally go home after lunch on sunday.

The traditional Okinawan weapons i picked up from various schools in my travels. The Bo kata I teach my students ofr purple belt is called sakugawa No Kon, which is a traditional Okinawan Kata, I learned it while studying Matsubayashi Ryu Shorin Ryu, Sai, Tonfa, Katana I learned from my first instructor J. L. Taylor.

    Rob,

Do you make weaponry mandatory at your school? If yes, do you teach the entire EPAK curriculum? That's a heck of a lot of material if you do. Are students tested on their ability to perform the weapons?

We had two of our higher ranking teenagers do a two man cane form a couple of years ago. They came hobbling in on their canes and then went at it. Awesome form.

Bo staff is common because it's easier to learn. Straight sword takes a LOT of practice for it to look good. I like broadsword forms for the power and the flash. I'm working on a spear set right now.
