Default One thing that really supercharged your Kenpo

What would you say was the one concept, or idea that really helped you to supercharge your Kenpo? Please give an example.

For me up to this point and Iím sure there will be more as I get more seasoned, but slap checks/ rebound checks seem to have helped me to really super charge my speed and add flash to my movements.

What are some of your stories??

Learning trapping techniques and then getting the opportunity to work them with Vic LeRoux really lit a fire under me. Vic is a master at trapping techniques.

At the last KITC seminar I asked him to show me some maneuvers and he man-handled one of my students with one hand while he held a Subway soda in the other with this big s**t eating grin on his face. It was hilarious.

Anyway, getting better with my trapping skills and as some people call it "sticky hands" has improved my speed and increased my effectiveness.

For me it was attending camps. In 2000 i attended a WKKA camp and somehow was picked as the dummy for the instructor in every class I attended. I had the holy bejesus beat out of me by Joe Palanzo, Dennis Tosten, Frank Trejo, Steve Arsenault, Mark Lawler and Brian Thomas that weekend. It really changed some of my movement patterns and renewed my intensity

We had a trip to Hawaii for the Professor Chow 20th memorial and we had seminars and old-school training with the top Kara-Ho people in the world which was VERY energizing!

Got to pay respects to Professor Chow at his gravesite which was an honor to attend.

Also got to meet Master Charles Kuheana who was a black belt under the Professor (and Grandmaster's first Kara-Ho teacher), that was energizing and moving for me.

Lastly, we had a bunch of promotions while in Hawaii and everybody who was anybody just about was there so that was a lifetime memory!

This was all enough energizing I should need to last a life-time...

The above is just my opinion.

Going to seminars given by SGM Ed Parker and getting instruction (in the seminar) from him.

Going to seminars given by GM Paul Mills and getting instruction (in the seminar) from him.

    (see a trend there? )

Those were two BIG highlights for me.
But really, getting a good feel for how my instructor, Roger W. Taylor, saw, understood and executed Kenpo...that was a very 'energizing' thing for me. His love of the art is infectious.
    I'm forever grateful to him!

I think it would be broken rhythm. It's a concept that can be applied to forms, techniques or sparring. If you can keep them guessing you've got a good chance.

Teaching. Having to explain the hows and the whys to students helped me better understand the concepts and principles and help me better execute them.

    What supercharges my Kenpo?

Knowing that Kenpo has given me such a great understanding of motion that I can watch pretty any style of martial arts and be able to understand what they're doing.

And if I can define it in Kenpo terms, then it is Kenpo...because American Kenpo is the universal language of motion.

Being able to take a base technique, break it down into the individual basics, rearrange them, reverse them...just smells like victory to me..

Kinda of hurts a bad guy when you use it on them right... That's just the icing on the cake for me...

Now I'm all pumped up and ready to go train.

    Great question....
