With no disrespect to Mr. Soto, this appears to be more a demo of a student's belief that (whatever movement that was) actually works as shown. I played it over and over again, paused it at various spots, looking for something that might answer the question, "now would this work for that murderous steroid-ridden tweaker with a knife?" that is oft the thrust of my own imagination in my own training. The answer my mind keeps telling me is an invariable "no".

perceptual speed is at play here....when do you start a movement to defend and what variables are at play?

Greetings.
This is from the comments to the clip:
"Excellent subtle movement to offset opponents spatial perception."
Just one of the things going on there.
You should ask him (Frank) directly. He is quite a friendly guy and very respectful. You should get a reply if you ask respectfully. Better yet, direct him here so he can reply to the thread.

E-mail sent, we'll see what happens...
That's what I was thinking hen I watched this- spatial distortion. The first three hand movments never touched the guy, and would have had no power if they had. But all three drew his attention and intention right where Mr. Soto wanted it to go. That third one especially, as it crossed his vision peripherally after he was already in trouble and confused.
I wish there was someone teaching around here that understood this stuff. I'd sign on in a heartbeat!

There are things that are worth knowing for their own sake, worth finding for the pure joy of discovery.
Is "spatial distortion" when you punch at a guy's right shoulder when he's in a left nuetral bow?

Not really.Originally Posted by Mikael151

Intercept, "stick", pace, lead and control by loading the attackers structure to create misalignments, explode for takedown or creating space for strike or disengagement.
"Force comes, redirect; force goes, follow; force detaches, strike!" Wing Chun saying.
Russian Systema has similar approaches.
Here, relaxation and explosive tension control is key.
Also I would add the visual cortex disruptions, Kenpo meridian manipulations, unskilled mental construct overlay, Thoughtform technologies, among others, whenever disengaged or to accentuate attacks.
Frank has another clip that has more examples where you can see more of the technologies in action:

SPATIAL RELATIONSHIP - The distance between you and an attacker attempting to utilize his mass against you in an assault, creates a specific relationship that can be exploited to an advantage on defense by the utilization of SPATIAL DISTORTION, or DISPLACEMENT before the actual assault occurs.
SPATIAL DISPLACEMENT – A disruption of the mental focal point in “space” in conjunction with the movement of body mass, creating subsequent momentary disorientation, weakness and lack of coordination in an attacker without necessarily physical contact.
SPATIAL DISTORTION - A concept that utilizes a fluctuation of anticipated time and space to disorientate and momentarily weaken your attacker. Although prevalent in all assaults, it is most evident in torso-to-torso type assaults where the attacker attempts to use his body weight as a part of the initial assault vehicle. Common in “tackling” assaults or “Ram” attacks in SubLevel Four Kenpo Techniques.
These principles are an integral part of certain elements of American Kenpo and its Splashing Hands, Chinese Kenpo, Five Animal Roots roots. They can also be found in another Splashing Hands, Kenpo offshoot, Limalama.
They are very real and are very effective when utilized properly. Frank is pretty good at it.

Doc, another question just occurred to me:
Did Mr. Parker do anything like this? Or do you, sir?
This seems like a really useful thing to use, especially if you want to avoid any excessive violence...
Doc, and Mr. Mercado, thank you for the great replies.
