Hello there. I also train with a USSD school here in Pittsburgh.
The head of my system started at USSD but we are independant Shaolin Kempo schools now.

I studied USSD in San Diego, CA. My head instructor was Mr. Kevin Kinsey. I stayed all the way through Purple but due to needs of the Navy over my needs to stay, the Navy transfered me to a non-USSD area. Now that I'm back in SD, I found that unfortunately USSD's price didn't stay the same. I'm not saying it's bad, because my body seemed to like the flow of the movements, it's just gotten more expensive than I can handle right now. Good luck in it though and I can send you a tape of yellow through blue katas and self defenses (if they still have those).

Welcome to kT first of all!
I was with USSD in the early 90's (white to brown) but left for Kara-Ho Kempo along with my instructor and a few other students.
I am by no means an expert in USSD or Kara-Ho but if you have any questions please feel free to let me know.
Cheers
The above is just my opinion.

Hello Mitzie and welcome to KempoTalk ...
I was with USSD through Nidan, 2nd Dan, in the San Diego area. You will hear alot about USSD, good and bad. I had mostly good experiences with the organization on a technical level, it was just time for me to move on. If you are lucky enough to learn from Master Richard Black, 7th Dan, you would be wise to stick with it for a while. He is about the best they have at defending against knife attacks. Hopefully his teaching style will suit your needs. My guess would be that Master Black may run the store, but you will be trained mostly by others. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your training, keep an open mind.
