Default Do you get nervous before a tournament?

I'm going to the Bryan Hawkins tournament tomorrow and I've been biting my nails like crazy! I did well last year as an orange belt...I feel more pressure to do even better this year.
    Any advice?

Well, I don't get nervous before a tournament, I do usually feel nervous just before an event. The only times I haven't been nervous are when I truly didn't care if I won or lost, shortly after this started happening I quit competing regularly, it seemed silly to spend money on something I didn't care about.

Don't worry about the nerves, they just mean that you have a desire to do well. The experience of doing the tournament will help you in alot of other ways, particularly when it comes to testing.

    Good luck and have fun!

Testing is different...I'm usually good at doing something, even if it's not the right thing. And that will give me an extra minute to figure out the 'right' thing to do.

I get nervous before every tournament and every demo I ever do. I've always been that way. As Blindside said earlier, it's really just an indicator that you want to do well and care about what you're doing.

Last year I had a bit of an advantage...this year I have to prove myself. I have to make my instructor look good as well. That and competing against my class mates.

Great responses so far! I definitely get a little adrenaline surge before competition, or any time I'm performing in front of people. It's definitely a different nervous than how I feel when I'm testing.

In my experience those students who compete at tournaments tend to test better than those who don't. I don't know if there is a covariate in there that those who are willing to compete are more confident, but the trend has been pretty steady at our school.

Our school isn't geared for tournaments. We just added a new student so we have a total of 4 This one is a chance for our instructor to see all his old buddies once a year.
I dont get so nervous about testing because I've been through a bunch in TKD. The phliosphy there was testing was a celibration and you couldnt test if you didnt know your stuff...it was more a showcase. In Kenpo there IS the possiblity to fail, still he wont let you test until he knows you are ready. My biggest problem is with self defense, my strength is that I will DO something when attacked...that's more important than doing the right thing.
Right now I'm excited about the next tournament...as it gets closer I'm sure I'll be nervous!

    Hi Anoise,

This post is about why the pre-start phenomenon is important to have.

    >I'm going to the Bryan Hawkins tournament tomorrow and I've been biting my nails >like crazy! I did well last year as an orange belt...I feel more pressure to do even >better this year.
    >Any advice?

Well, you made it through it. Two 2nd places and 2 third places.

    That’s pretty darn good.

    Congratulations.

What you were talking about was two different things.

Thing #1. Apprehension about the upcoming event.

That can easily be helped with a two minute “energy tapping” routine.
Rub your chest where the arm attaches to the body as you say out loud, “Even though I’m apprehensive about tournament event X, I totally accept and appreciate myself” Do that 3 times.

Then Say, “I’m apprehensive” as you tap the following spots 10-15 times. Inner eye brow, outer eye brow, under eye, under nose, under bottom lip, under collar bone, on sternum, under arms pits, on outside of thighs.

For some very good resources read “Energy Psychology in Psychotherapy” by Fred Gallo, “The Promise of Energy Psychology” by David Feinstein, or the FREE EFT tutorial by Gary Craig.

Now go and practice what you already know you need to get good at for the event.

Thing #2. This is called the PRE-START PHENOMENON.

This is about how you feel right before the event. And some of the best athletes NEED that feeling of being sick to the stomach before the event. It means that their adrenals are squirting adrenaline into their system in PREPARATION for the event!

    That adrenaline strengthens muscular contractions!

So in many cases the worse you feel, the better you will perform.

Mel Patton, who used to be the fastest human in the world, always vomited before his better races.

    Have fun.

I should try this before my next test. Sounds good. I try to spend a few moments meditating and re-focusing my nerves to help me perform better. I will print this out for future reference.

As for the pre-start thing...I lined up for self defense and said to my partners that I forgot the whole routine But when the attacks came, my body just took over and I came in first. The rush of doing well is worth the nerves before hand!

    no no no
I'm a blue belt now. I LOVE weapons and I learned the staff set before I started taking Kenpo, so I did the staff set last year and wanted to learn something else for this year. It took me a heck of a long time, but as long as I was willing to put the effort in, my instructor was willing to teach me. For him it was a way to remember the form.
