Default What is YOUR pet-peeve in class?

My pet-peeve in our classes are the students who rarely wear gi tops. As long as they have a school T-shirt they are not required to wear the gi jacket so I can't really complain too much but I would certainly prefer the full gi. For belt promotions the full gi is mandatory however...

I guess the "full-gi" thing is just the way I was came up through the ranks, my instructor "emphasized" the full-gi concept The only small practicality is when we are performing grab techniques, it is much more challenging to do the technique successfully with the jacket on so it is better practice for the street.

I do admit though that I like the tradition of the full gi, so that is where this thought came from.

    What is/are your pet-peeve(s)?
The above is just my opinion.

My pet peeve is people that don't wash their clothes that they wear to class and end up stinking from stale sweat...or worse. I don't think it's respectful to the art, or to your fellow classmates by working out in dirty clothes.

I would never allow anyone on the mat smelling like hot garbage....that's just nasty and shows no self-respect, much less respect for others. NNNasty.

What gets under my skin is having to tell the same student the same thing over and over and over again, class after class after class. It makes me feel that they aren't paying attention, not putting forth adequate effort to actually learn the material, and just plain don't give a damn. That gets me aggitated.

People who show up to Kenpo class and are too afraid of hurting themselves to do Kenpo. "It might hurt if I hit the pads" - "I might break a nail" - "I don't like to spar, I might get hit" - "I don't like to do techniques, it might hurt" ....

Need to keep the Tae bo number handy....

Thoses that yell at the refs, instructors.
The ones that use to be TKD moms and think that kenpo class should be filled with kicking drills and mindless obedience!

The once in a blue moon student. Shows up only for special events
The can I use the bathroom 10 times during class kid

This kinda turned into a rant. Im sorry everyone

No apology needed! That reminded me of when I studied jiu-jitsu. There was a guy by the name of Bergeone whose mom was at every class and every event. She had the biggest mouth...put it this way, she could have rivaled my DI from basic training! I used to beg my instructor to let me compete against him because of his mom. There was nothing I liked more than tieing him up like a pretzel to the very loud dismay of his mother. What was wierd was that this guy was like my age and he also still lived with her!! Needless to say, she was the source of much pain for him. Muahahahahahaha.

My biggest pet peeve was the student that contradicted what I would say with something they would read online by another instructor. Many a time I would just say prove your point to me and if it didn't work we would drop the matter, if it did work we would explore later in private. I had one student who interupted me incessantly that what I was doing was wrong because this instructor said this, that instructor said that, I finally told him I taught in my school, and if he didn't like the way I taught he could go to one of the instructors he was always quoting from online.
    Quality outweighs quantity every time.

I have a much bigger issue with instructors that allow that to happen on their mats.

I have looked at all the comments from Kenpo Moms,to dirty Gi's, to incessant talkers. They all rate pretty high on my list. I guess one that gets to me is the student that has bounced from school to school and is always trying to tell everyone that he knows a better way way to do something than our way. We usually end up telling that it's "My Way,or the Hiway.

There is usually a good reason some of them move around a lot. Thy won't fit in anywhere!!!

    My pet peeves include:

Toughguy students (usually Kickboxers and MMA dudes at our school, but some Kenpo students also have toughguy mentalities)

Students who swear or show no respect to the school by not bowing after accidentally hurting someone or bowing when entering/leaving the mats

That's all I can think of right now...

Really juicy pet peeves everyone! The MMA tough guys is a peeve of mine although where I train is not a commercial school so you need to be invited...I used to run a commercial school when the Gracies were at their peak and my pet peeve were those who thought Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was superior to all other arts. I always had 3 things to say to them:

    1. Asphalt, broken glass, barstools- and anything else dangerous on the ground.

    2. Multiple attackers

    3. Weapons

Agreed! we've got one that is particularly guilty of this type of behavior.

Another one of mine is the students that spend their time just goofing around, not taking the class seriously. They're a waste of my time as an instructor, and they're wasting the time of whoever is unfortunate enough to be paired up with them for the drills.
