    Default James Ibrao

Listed as SGM Parker's first black belt. Debated by some. What do you think?

    Martin...

My instructor Joe Dimmick received his black belt in 1962 at the Pasadena school, and studied for several years with James Ibrao prior to that. I grew up competing against Sifu Ibrao's students in SoCal, but didn't really meet Sifu Ibrao til the first Gathering of Eagles. At that time, he claimed to have been one of Mr Dimmick's primary instructors as he and Chuck Sulivan went up through the ranks. I didn't run into anyone at GOE who disputed his claims as to being Parker's first bb. That's about all the light I can shed on the matter.

Well, Mr. Parker said it wasn't true and apparently Mr. Ibrao says its not true when asked. There was a long discussion on this on Martialtalk.

I have had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with James Ibrao on a couple of occasions. One thing is for sure - whether he in fact was Ed Parker's first black belt or not - he is a heck of a great guy with a whole lot of passion for the martial arts.

John McSweeney had said that Ed Parker had always told his students, during the late 50's early 60's, that Ibrao was his first black belt. The story seemed to change later, probably after the split.

Here is a quote from another Kenpo board by Ted Sumner.

I have received communication from Charles Beeder Jr. in the last few days. In addition to providing me with many photographs of Ed Parker and his early students, which we will be posting on our Photo’s Page, Mr. Beeder confirmed that when Ed Parker left Utah for California, all of his Utah students were brown belts. Mr. Beeder stated that it was not until 1963 that his father was awarded his Shodan by Ed Parker.

Unfortunantly, he gave us 2 eyes and 10 fingers, which explains the problems we get on the internet.~Zoran

And that's all that matters. Well Said!

Has anyone seen the 5 forms he is currently teaching? Is it his own deal or did he borrow them. I know the book set is in Tracy's and I learned Mass attack in the 80's.
