    Default Old School Sparring

Just thought folks would like to know that a new video has been posted on www.edparkertribute.com

It's the 1966 IKC finals. Lots of big names you'll recognize at the beginning of their carreers. If you know anything about that era waving your hands around didn't score in those days.

Thanks for keeping us posted on the updates Bill! I never get tired of watching footage from "back in the day".

    Bill,

What is the title of the video from the '66 finals? I saw the Crenshaw sparring video but not the one from the IKCs.

it's interesting to watch Joe Lewis fighting with essentially just a side kick. Chuck Norris is fighting from a Korean style system and yet he is fighting using both and and foot technique in a relatively balanced manner.

The art Chuck Norris studied was Tang Soo Do. Back then a lot of the Korean styles were balanced, with equal hand and foot techniques. It wasn't until later that TKD really pushed away the idea of using hands in sparring, the almost complete removal of hands became apparent when TKD started to push for Olympic sport recoginioton around 1980.

True, I just found it interesting how balanced he fought. His style while dated was far more modern than the others recorded in '66. I briefly took TKD in 1978 and that school trained punching very vigorously.

I have the video The New Gladiators, which has a lot of great sparring in it. It is always great to watch.

Yeah, I like watching Tom Kelly go out knock them down and them punch them. hopefully more and more of this old footage can be found and released more generally.

An instructor in London, Ontario named Joe foster brought Joe Louis to town a couple times for seminars. The first time I attended a Louis seminar I learned a TON. He used me as a dummy, more like a victim or maybe I was a real dummy for volunteering, for a a set of combos and he hit me with a side kick that blasted me back out of the ring. I felt it for the rest of the day. But I can do that combo in my sleep and it has been atleast 15 yrs since that day.

The second time I met Joe Lewis was at an Intensive seminar with him and Bill Wallace. After Wallace led us through a massive stretch it was a long hard hitting day. Everyone learned tons of great hand and feet combo's.

Has anybody mentioned "Super foot" Bill Wallace? I had the priviledge of watching Mr. Wallace fight my instructor Michael Sanders at the USKA Grand National's in 1974. It was Bill's last tournament as an amateur before he turned pro . My instructor lost to Bill but so what? He went on to become a world champion.

I wonder if that had anything to do with him forming his own "style."
BTW, "The New Gladiators" is awesome. I hightly reccomend it!
