I have a four year old daughter that takes Kenpo. She's always ambushing me when I walk in the door at night.

That's about it. My daughter is 4 and she's really picking things up pretty well. Between her and I..it's more "Play" than anything. I teach her basic grab excapes, blocking, kicking and palm strikes.... Then we "SPAR".
She's so energetic!!!!! It's a blast. She can get dead serious too. It's AWESOME!

My son has an interest in it. Bought him a Gi and whatnot.... but he doesn't want to be in "Group" lessons right now. That's Okay. I definitely don't want to push him into it or anything.

If I had kids (which I'm glad I don't at this point in my life) they would definately be in Kenpo, and being taught by someone far better than me.

My daughter will be 3 in late June and does the Star Block Set very well.

That said, I am worried she may not like Kenpo as much as I want her too because right now she associates Kenpo with time away from daddy (since I teach so much).

    Hi John,

Well....there's no easy answer for that as we can both tell.

Here's what I am thinking....currently, I won't start kids until the age of 6 in Kenpo. But, since my daughter Morgan couldn't keep up in that class (since she will just be 3 in June), I was thinking about starting my first ever "Little Kenpoists" program sometime early next year. I am hoping that being in class with others her age, and, having a "head start" above them, will motivate her to love it. Of course, with that young of an age group, I would have to incorporate some games into the class so they don't lose focus or enjoyment.

    Any other ideas?

My school does something like that called "Little Ninjas"...I think they start the ages at 4-5 before they can get bumped into the kids' curriculim (yeah I spelled THAT wrong). MOre often than not, its existing students younger brothers and sisters who, after watching on the sidelines, have learned how to mimic their siblings actions. Ive watched em do Starblock on the sidelines, along with attempts at salutations, kicks, punches, you name it. Really cute =^_^=

Since Im not Uber-familiar with the program, I can ask the Lady who runs it what exactly it is she does with them, if you'd like? I See her Monday's usually.

    Hmmm,

Perhaps I should consider one of my instructors commencing my daughter's training in a group class first.

    Thanks for the tip.

    Mr. Elmer,

I have just the opposite problem with my four year old. She'll listen to me, but when it comes to other instructors she spaces out and does as she pleases. Maybe it's an age thing. My daughter is only 4. I guess the real question is when do their priorities change?

    Hey Billy,

Their priorities change dramatically when they begin going through the change of life. My two daughters are close to the same age and they both started pretty close to the same time. I was totally unprepared for that. The best advice I can give you is have the best relationship with your daughter and be as close as possible with each other. Always let her know she can come to you with anything no matter what and that you will always be there for her, so when that time comes it won't be quite as bad.
    Hope that helps

I would say that you're giving me some sound advice. You're not the only one that has said this to me. They sure grow fast!

Damn, it seems like only a few days ago when she managed to take off her first diaper. (Note: Babies believe that sticky poop makes beautiful crap art. Parents on the other hand... Don't.)

The key word is "THEIR" priorities, not ours.

My youngest daughter is 10 (started taking Kenpo at age 7)

My oldest daughter is 13 (she is a Cheerleader, no interest in Kenpo, but she knows to go for the groin or throat if necessary)

I know we want to control the game, but actually we're only spectators.

    Fellow Kenpoist,
I f i could share with you my experiences, teaching my daughter (Taylah) who is now 7.

I have asked my self many of the same questions that you guys are bouncing of each other! mmmh funny lol

I am a single parent, my daughter resides with me So im "Mr Mum!" Any way when my daughter was about three and a half, she would watch Dad pracitce and teach classes , she would later mimic what she saw, and with great encouragement I would say WOW !! do it again.

And with in a short time, Tay would ask DAD are we kenpoing today ?,yep again look Dad! ( tay doing a front kick) Cool!!

Dad would practice , My turn she would say, Hence I started to teach her at home, for some reason she loves kicking, so that's all we would do! funny enough within a short period of time tay had developed great flexiblitiy , and great Kicks , I found it very easy to teach my daughter just kicking to begin with ,for its just one technique,at a time ie, front, round, hook, and it was very self evident to both of us to see her progression which alouded her to develop the qualities and understanding of balance, left and right, co - ordination , visualization, heck thats how i taught her what a question mark was . LOL

So all was good until it came to participate in group classes, during group classes i found that it was much better to be the parent than the instructor.
That was my opinion , yet my daughter perfered that I was the one teaching her, catch 22

I have encouraged her interest s with her training , whether it be kicking, arnis, bo, or forms., competiton or what ever, Since we are together so much ,and training & teaching plays an important part in our life. So whatever is motivating her, is what im teaching her a little unorthodox, YES but its working out just fine. There is a structure,???

4years later and all is good, I think im over the storm at the moment, Yet those teenage years now thats a corncern????

I am very fortunate to be able to share with my Daughter a common interest, and the benifits of the martial arts .The pleasures of teaching / learning, friendships developed , competitions , and most importantly the Love and Admiration between us .

    I say its all good.

We are lucky, because here at my home I have constructed a private dojo that is 20x20ft with 16ft ceilings and they can go in there and practice any time. Unfortunately, they prefer to practice in the living room more often than they should!!!

My son is 3 years old and I am just starting to try to interest him in Kenpo. We just keep it fun and do some stances and basic kicks and punches right now. Also some focus pad work. I am considering enrolling him in the local "Little Dragons" class........not Kenpo, but the instructor is well-respected in the community and I have viewed their program and their basics look very similar to Kenpo. Also there, he can enjoy group work with kids his age.......something I cannot give him at home one on one. I hope that he will get a good base there at their school and develop a true interest in the arts. And I hope to eventually teach him Kenpo later on. I will keep practicing with him at home too.
