I'm definitely a one. I don't think that the tailored version should be taught. Teach the base system as it is and show the student how to tailor for type, perspective, and usefulness.

We are a principle based school. If something is not working, one of the basic principles is not being followed. Techniques and drills are examples of the principles. This is usually a sliding scale for the students. The lower ranks are given techniques to learn the principles and as they progress they are required to apply the principles to any situation.

What is some techniques are more principle driven, designed to teach you about theories and concepts and others are designed to be used as is. Sword and Hammer is very much to the point and very effective while some more advanced techniques seem to contain a lot of lesson that would help you a variety of situations.

or, the more basic the technique the more basic the lesson...
and, the more sophisticated the technique the more sophisticated the lesson...

they are all there to teach concepts and principles while being effective in the appropriate self defense scenario.

it's a floor wax. it's a dessert topping. its both! from the kitchens of dupont.

i really dont want to go down that category completion rabbit hole again. it dangerous ground to tell students "now these techniques over here are the ones you can actually use... but, not these over here. they are here only to prove a point."

I think most people would consider themselves in the #1 category.

In my school, we do the technique as written, then we start sticking inserts and stuff into it.

We do change some of the moves, but I think it's important to know what the move calls for before making the changes.

Label us as a #1 type school. Start at the beginning and build/augment/tailor as you go along.

I would definitely say #1. Anyone can go through the movements of a technique but if it does not work for them than it is up to them to change it to suit them.

Definitely a one. The basics are your foundation, without a strong foundation you can't really build on your skill and therefore you a re just doing this by rote. How does that go...
