Like other kenpo schools we use stripes to show the ranks of the individuals.

    do you use red tape?
    Yes, some do.

or have some sort of material sewn on???
I would prefer to have stripes sewn into the belt. Red bias tape or something along that lines.

    No

Sew the stripes on. The belt looks better that way. If you can't do it, take it to a seamstress person and pay a couple of bucks to let them do it professionally.

I have hand sewn stripes on my belts before and it's quite tedious work. If you're crafty with a machine it will be much faster.

Just have them sewn on, you could use 3M electrical tape but.... It's your black belt man..

I went to a local embroidery company and they sent my belt to a woman they use for alteration, it cost about $10, well worth it. Deal with local independent businesses in your own area and you will never go wrong.

Your best bet to have the stripe sewn on the belt is the tailor shop. Maybe pick up a belt now and take it in so that it will be ready by test date.

Mrs. C. would not let you test if you were not ready to test.

I wasn't going to put a red stripe on mine until I had at least two, then about six months ago (probably from this forum) I learned that no stripe means 'honorary' black belt or something.

I rushed to get the electrical tape.

I know how lazy I am about some things, so I wanted to wait until I had at least two stripes before I bothered, otherwise I'd end up with one tailored and one tape. That would be tacky.

I'm more concerned about the practicing before the test part.

I went to practice today and had a huge brain fart on several blue extensions. Not a good thing.

These allergies are killing me though.

And allergy medicine makes it worse. Always end up smacking someone when I have "medicine head".
At my old school, there was a black belt who didn't have any stripes. He was/is an honorary black belt. I never thought of that until now.

You can also order a belt with stripes from most of the major Gi/Uniform suppliers. I recommend KI, or DOSHIN - both are on-line. My KI one looked great.

Now that I use a bar, I had the seamstress do it next door, they did great and included stitching wherever the belt was stitched. It was really tight!

    Salute,
Really nice but really expensive, when you look at the price of goignt to a tailor or seamstress.

A blackbelt with no stripes on it can also be for a Jr. Blackbelt.

No stripes can also mean a real bad ass that does not like the idea of stipes on his belt I know a 4th degree black belt and a fifth that wear there original faded black belt with no stripes.
    I would not want to make the mistake of thinking they were Honorary black belts,could be your last.:}

My stripes were sewn on by a seamstress, but I think the KC ones look much better. The stiching on the stripes matches perfectly with that of the belt and the distance is accurately measured between stripes and the edge of the belt. I plan on ordering one in the near future.

Those belts actually look pretty descent. It's too bad that there isn't a bigger viewing thumbnail for the belts themselves.

Call Vic Le Roux and ask him about the stitching process. They are top quality.

Rob got to see mine on my visit, they do a great job.

There is a growing number of oldsters in the art who are giving up the stripe/bar thing altogether, in reaction to the "too much red in kenpo" thing. I know of several seniors who don't wear any stripes, bars, or other indicators. Not all blanks are honarary.

    Regards,

    Dave
