    Default Bruce Lee and Kenpo

I was watching a documentary of Bruce Lee today and near the end of the show they were talking about one of Mr. Lee’s last movies “Game of Death”. I had seen this move a few years ago but didn’t notice then because I was not a student of Kenpo at the time. In this documentary the last part of the move Game of Death was shown. If you have never seen Game of Death I’ll give you the basics of the move. Bruce Lee played the part of a retired undefeated karate champion. He was invited to help in a plot to steel a priceless treasure in a budest temple. The treasure was located in a temple five levels tall and each floor was guarded by a martial artist of a different style. To make a long story short a crime boss kidnapped the wife and little brother of Bruce to make him participate and help a team of Martial artists fight there way to the top of the temple.

In the documentary as they were getting ready to show the last part of the movie Game of Death, the commentary talked about who Mr. Lee picked for each role in the move. The fighter he chose for the “protector of the third level” was a good friend of Mr. Lee’s but also a Kenpo and Escrema practitioner. In the commentary they talked about a Kenpo technique that was used called Dance of Death then a clip was shown from the movie of that technique being done. Although I personally do not know that technique yet I did recognize it from clips I have seen that were posted around the internet.

I just thought this it was very interesting and wanted to put it out there for everyone to check out if you get the chance.

That good friend was Dan Inosanto, who is now a martial art legend in his own right. He was a black belt under Parker before going to study with Bruce Lee.

I found a very informative article on Mr. Inosanto at http://paloweb.com/wikipedia.asp?l=e...s=Dan+Inosanto

I didn’t want to post the article as I am not sure I still remember the correct way to cite the article and what are all the requirements to doing so on this forum.

Just because you do something one way, does not mean that everyone else does it that way, or that it is even the correct way.

Actually several people left Parker to train with Lee, with Parker's full blessing.

It only makes sense. They shared similar philosophies. Some crosstrained between the two as well and gained rank with both. It's well known they were friends. SGM Parker allowed Bruce to live with him during the "lean" times.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dan Inosanto at a seminar of a local club. He gave an amazing Kali demonstration. I was the only Kenpo practitioner there at the time i got the opportunity to shoot the breeze about kenpo with Dan Inosanto!

If you would like to see more Kenpo references watch Enter the Dragon and you will see a scene where Jim Kelly goes into a dojo. The 2 instructor leading the class are Grandmasters Steve ( Sanders) Muhammad, and Donnie Williams of The Black Karate Federation. Gm. Muhammad was said to have the "Fastest Hand in Karate" by Bruce Lee. The B.K.F. is a proud Kenpo Organization IMHO that has been overlooked by the Kenpo community atlarge. Over the last 20 years many great Kenpo Warriors have come out of that organization.

    Hi;
Yes Vic had some time with Mr Pottet.
Just a quick note;some of the kempo players that went to JKD
    Dan Inosanto-Larry Hartsel-Stevie Golden-Jerry Pottet-Rich Bustilio-
Ed Heart-just to name a few.
Bruce would often go to Kempo & kajukempo(many differant off shoots so please for give me for listing 1 --ref. only)Bruce would learn what he could from the 2nd or 3rd in command as he would say.The top guy was
not compliant with showing the art (most of the time)
Vic Leroux has come to see me at one of my seminars in Whitter Ca.
I had this time between us filmed as,he has been a freind for over 6 yrs,
Ill stand by his side & Im sure he ll stane by mine.
Back to The Game of Death--the actual 40 min that Lee filmed & was removed & edited also Had outtakes. Some showed Inosanto working
out alittle as well as a couple others.Bruce was close to Mr.Parker & always welcome at Long beach,Hence his demos 1964 & 68.
Law of the fist ment a lot to Bruce,He honored it & often did some of the
ways of kempo.I beleave Mr Parker had a great effect on how Bruce saw the arts & inovated them.
