    Question Self defence

Does anyone have experience using Kenpo in a real self defence situation?

I'm a relative beginner in Tracy's Kenpo, but have been doing martial arts for some time now (primarily sport based), and got into Kenpo for self defence reasons. However, I'm starting to have doubts about the movements in actual self defence situations.

    What does anyone think?

    Cheers.

I have been in a few fights in my life and my Kenpo training certainly helped. In the most serious fight, I was working as a night stocker in a 24-hour grocery store when 12 guys from a local gang came in and started a brawl. Because I happened to be the guy working closest to the front, I was the first person attacked. I had not trained in probably 10 years, but the instincts kicked in. He swung a right roundhouse punch to my face and I immediately stepped in with a left outward/upward block. I then grabbed his shoulders and pulled him into a knee somewhere around his groin or stomach, wherever it was caused him to bend over. I did another knee to his face and then put him into some type of headlock while I punched on his face. At some point, two of his buddies came and pushed me off him and they all took off.

Without the training, I’m sure I would not have stepped into the punch and blocked it properly nor would I have landed the blows I did. I did not execute an exact technique, but everything I did was natural instinct based on my training. I could have done better dealing with the multiple attackers around, but like I said, I was 10 years out of practice.

It's less about the style, and more about the quality of instruction.
However, I've done Tang Soo Do and then Tracy's - I can say Tracy's has prepared me way better for any real altercations.
