Please share some of your favorite drills/lessons that help students explore the kenpo self-defense techniques beyond the rote memory performance phase. Thank you.

Don't know any. Sadly my instructor was Very closed minded and refused to allow anyone to go off written material at all and always looked at notes he made 40 years ago. Sadly I've seen a lot of instructors do the same

Back at Huk's Camp in Vegas, Mr. Diaz had a couple of exercises I really enjoyed. They were focused on position recognition and grafting.

Select a single move from any technique and execute.
Then choose another single move from a different technique and execute.
Then choose another single move from a third technique and execute.
    Continue.

Do not repeat moves, and do not repeat techniques as you move through this drill.

I found this it be fun, and thought provoking.

    As a corollary ..

Have a student pick a single position from a technique, and allow other students attempt to identify the technique and move.

So, first... you have to have an Uke that is willing to be hit... Second.. you have to be willing to hit... not all out but a good 20% something to get a realistic reaction.

Then run technique as written... then run it again with a bit more impact... the run it again with the Uke giving a different response or different footwork..

    Rinse and Repeat.

Have a partner hold out a pair of focus pads and practise a sequence from a technique over and over again and on both sides.
