    Default Round House Kicks

What part of the foot do you prefer to strike with when delivering a round house kick?

Ball of the foot or Instep.

Above the thighs I use the instep, for the knees I use the ball of the foot

It depends on the target, and the angles.

Always the instep, I do not want my toes to get broken.

It does depend on targets and angle of entry. If I'm kicking to the midsection or groin I will use the ball of my foot (fyi: pull your toes back PK ) But if I'm kicking the back of the thigh I'll use my instep or my shin (but that would be a shin kick wouldn't it....)

I'm pretty good at pulling my toes back, so it part it depends on how nice I want to be.

A roundhouse with the ball of the foot hurts a lot more.

I find it difficult to pull my toes back in my normal footwear (boots) and boots hurt a lot more

I prefer my instep (broken toes and lovely arthritis from such)..
though we teach our students to use the ball of the foot..

Ball of foot or shin, depending on "relative angles and targets", and if I want penetration.

Never the instep, as the tarsels (long bones of the foot) are easily broken; and they dissipate the force of the strike too much.

When wearing shoes or boots, even with steel toes, I still curl my toes back. True, they won't go back much; but they don't have to, since the footwear takes the force of the kick. Curling my toes does help give rigidity to my foot and ankle.

I remember seeing a picture somewhere of a JMA practitioner kicking a tire bare-foot with straight toes. He actually collapsed the tire! I still hurt just thinking about that! Madness...!!!

Kicking to the head and body I will always use the instep. While fighting an opponent that has the groin partially open then I will use the ball of the foot. If it's to the leg or lower then use a shin. It's all relative to the target.

I only like to round house to the groin when they have a off the ground, but that is just my preference.

But you have to be on one side of him to deliver a round house kick to the groin unless he is in some kind of fighting stance too. To me that would take too much time.

If I'm kicking to the groin I'll use the ball of the foot. Pretty much anywhere else I use the shin, thai style. I don't personally care for using the instep unless I'm sparring and don't want to blast someone too hard.
