I point my toes down.
Where do your toes point when doing a back kick? Down or to the side?

I point my toes down.
Quality outweighs quantity every time.
I believe we are instructed to point ours down as much as possible.

Well the heel is up and the foot is down.. but the toes are pointed forward as much as possible just like a front heel kick you toes are pulled up as far as possible to not only protect the toes but to lock the ankle into a solid striking tool.
..... now that I think about it... does Kenpo use a front heel kick?
I try to use my heel for contact on front kicks......but thats just a personal thing. I can get a bit more penetration.Originally Posted by MrBunny

Depends on the target and flexibility of the one executing the kick.Originally Posted by MrBunny

I totally Agree, funny enough we were working the back kick in class tonight, in my experience I find that when teaching students a back kick they dont tend to fuse there thighs together when chambering,or in the commencement of the early stages of the kick,( after the chamber) students also tend to roll their knee out as well, greating a nice little triangle ouch!Originally Posted by Seabrook

Well yea I know what they are forOriginally Posted by gakusei
I just didnt know if Kenpo specificly taught the differant uses of front heel and front thrust.
Spinning back kicks or back kicks off the front foot are my favorite weapon to use. The reason why people are having problems with back kicks is because they are trying to kick too high. Back kicks are meant to be a groin shot. The higher you kick the more your hip joint can not take the pressure or grinding so your hip flips over into a side kick.Originally Posted by Seabrook

Topic of Toes..
Toes down.. foot 'bladed'
I was just going to say something like that. Except I'd say rear kicks are meant to go as high as waist level. After that, do a side kick.Originally Posted by parkerkarate
I know one instructor who teaches them all as side kicks (the side rear kick) as mentioned. I've asked him about it, but he hasn't ever answered.
