What is it about Kenpo that draws you to it the most? Is it the physical, mental, or spiritual aspect of the art?

I think the greatest asset to Kenpo is the scientific process that is the foundation of the principles and techniques.

"...because I have to feed the wall." (laughs) In all seriousness what draws me to Kenpo is a spiritual sense of security.

When I first walked into the school, I was attracted to the techniques that the upper belts were doing. I also liked that I did not see a lot of high flashy kicks and unrealistic spin moves and such. But what kept me in was a combination of all three listed above.

mind you, it is a WHOLE package... I like all the aspects listed, but I like them best for their physical manifestation.
The spiritual keeps me moving when everything else in me says I can't.
The mental is what makes the physical most effective.
But the physical is where it's at. Kenpo is a "DOING", an activity. The spiritual and mental are tools to help the physical be all it can.

I think my signature says it all. I just like to hit people. All kidding aside, there are only a finite number of ways the human body can move. Once you have trained the body to a degree of coordination and skill, you have to elevate your mind to that same level or your physical skills will never evolve. Therefore, I feel that you have to apply the Kenpo rule of three here. Wrap your brain around that one, and maybe start a new thread about the signifigance of the number three in American Kenpo......
Just because you do something one way, does not mean that everyone else does it that way, or that it is even the correct way.

Of course all 3 aspects are ever present however the one that draws me most to it is probably mental. More than in any other art that I've seen Kenpo makes the brain the great equalizer. An intelligent Kepoist can easily defeat a larger opponent if he's smarter about it.

Thumbs up Re: What is it that draws you to Kenpo the most?

As a young kid, the physical side was what drew me into kenpo, I wanted to kick butt like everyone else I knew. Kenpo suited that feeling, upon appearance, perfectly. It was straight forward, and ferocious, no messing around. As I matured through the years, the mental and spiritual became just as, if not more important. I remember meditating and theorizing----BOOOOOOOORING! What does this have to do with anything? Just show me what I have to do to get the job done, don't waste my time! Now, all I seem to want is the "Zen" thing (especially in the adult world, with all of the problems we face). And the Mental side? I find myself analyzing everything, trying to tailor, modify, etc.. more than doing the techniques. I guess I'm getting old---LOL!

I love the way that Kenpo adats to the practioner rather than the individual have to fit the art.

I am sure you could get a zillion different responses on peoples' views of the "spiritual" side of Kenpo, so I would have to say the physical first, and then the mental as a close second for me.

When i first started practicing the art, it was for the physical aspect, i thought it was a terrific workout. Then, a few months later, i realized it was also very mentally engaging, it kept me interested and focused, week after week, year after year. Since you're asking me now, six years into my training, i'll tell you it is the challenge. It is being determined, every day to wake up and practice, even when i'm totally dogged, knowing that i'll feel better when i'm done. It is the strength of spirit i have developed through the years of training that draws and keeps me coming back.
