Default What Questions Do You Ask Yourself When You Practice Techniques?

    Greetings All,

When you practice your self defense techniques what questions do you ask yourself?

    Such as....

    Where do you generate power?
    Where are you checking?
Why are you checking those areas?
What's the purpose of this particular stance?
    Where are you vulnerable?
    Where is the opponent vulnerable?
    How many points of contact?
What can you do to make this more efficient?
Which principles are you applying for this technique?
Which concepts are you practicing in this technique?

After asking yourself all that and more....

Do you then go through all that again with the Ideal, What-If, and Formulation stages?

Also do you ask these questions when doing your katas/forms? drills?

Sometimes, all too often, it's "How does this technique go again?" lol.

I focus on where I can control the opponent more, destroy a target more or generate more power.

    Good question.

    ...is this practical?
    ...does this work?

No, but those are good questions I should be asking myself. I'll start doing that more.

What are the major moves and what are the minor moves?
How much "gravy" can I add?

Mostly I have to figure out how a 5'2" woman can use this against a 6'2" man.

I was watching Kenpogeoff on YouTube and I remembered my instructor mentioning height, width, depth for yourself and your opponent.

Just thinking about all these questions, a person can write a novel on one self defense technique.

The theories and philosophies are a nice mental exercise to help kenpo become sharper.

The blood and sweat is what makes kenpo effective.

Nice to know if needed you have the skills to defend yourself and loved ones.

Wonder how much my opinion will change as I continue my Kenpo journey.

when i perform a move, i tend to keep saying to my self how much bend in the knees, am i in my neutral bow stance, and what other moves can i add to it.

It does not matter where the Martial art comes from. if it can help you defend yourself it is worth learning( Bruce Lee ) May the Force Be With You
