I was in my early teens when I began my study of kenpo, (about 1966) everytime I learned a new technique I'd show it to my friends.
"Hey throw a punch, watch this."
But they'd step with the wrong foot or throw the wrong punch or it would come to fast and clip me on the end of my nose, ouch.
It was about a year into my training, purple or blue belt, I forget, that I had enough techniques under my belt (pun intended) that I could deal with what ever my friends threw my way.
Lesson:
Watch who you show your techniques to, they may try to trip you up.
Remember, colored belts are nursery school, beginning stuff. Believe it or not first degree blackbelt is about freshman in highschool. Don't be a highschool dropout, most martial artists stop training when they reach black belt. Aim for college.

I was told, once I earn my black belt, then I can go to the starting line.
