    Default What caught your attention?

What made you decide to take up Kenpo? For that matter, what made you start practicing MA instead of say, learn how to shoot a gun for self defense, etc?

My biggest draws are self-preservation and health.

Post modifed atthe request of the thread starter to be open to all members instead of just the ladies.

    Here, I'll start:

After I saw yet another drunken bar fight, I decided I needed a way to protect myself. I'm a musician, and starting out, you wind up in some pretty crummy places... so when a fellow musician recommended Kenpo and explained it to me, I figured I'd check it out.

I've learned much more than just the self preservation aspect, but I do feel more secure. Not too secure, but more aware.

I was in Jr. High. I had a friend who I wanted to have as a better friend (partly because she had another friend and I wanted to be the best friend) and she was taking kenpo. What better way to worm your way in than to do something together?

So I started taking it and it worked! We became best friends. She stayed through brown belt and I never stopped (for long).

So it was just luck that she was taking kenpo.

I was taking TKD until my teacher moved in with my girlfriend... I went looking for another TKD school and found a Kempo school, not really understanding the difference-

Turned out to be a good trade!

    Cheers!

Does your gramma study also? That would be cool. I'd love see some street thug try to mug an old lady and she turns around and whups his arse! That would be classic!

Just because you do something one way, does not mean that everyone else does it that way, or that it is even the correct way.

No my gramma does not. It might give her a heart attack, given her current health Of course after every injury she starts questioning on whether she did a good thing, or a bad thing.

I have experimented with many different styles and I have found for my body type (short and stalky like a cube) Kenpo lets me harness the most effective energy and movement.

I love shooting for accuracy and competition but mainly for fun. The main reason I dont practice this for self defence is you are NOT always going to have a weapon such as a firearm on you. And I have had alot of experiance in shooting "things" and it is way to messy.

My primary reason for starting (and continuing) was/is effective self-defense. The good physical-fitness, the many friends I've made, and the fact that it's just a heckuva lot of fun are just icing on the cake.

I chose Kenpo specifically because I knew w/o a doubt that I didn't want TKD (Kenpo and TKD are about all this area has to offer). Learning lone-kimono in my intro lesson is what really clinched the deal (I'm a little sadistic )

However, I don't practice kenpo instead of carrying a gun or a knife; I do kenpo in addition to the others. Empty-hand, contact weapons (knives and impact weapons), and firearms are all part of a complete self-defense "toolbox."

    What he said.

But when I got into martial arts it was just because it looked fun. I got into kenpo because I liked the self-defense aspect and MOST importantly, the instructor was the best instructor around.

I saw a demo when I was 10 years old at our local fair. I watched it intently and told my parents, "I want to do that."

I joined the very next night.

For me, it was a matter of finding a new sport. I had just spent two years doing gymnastics and was told I wouldn't go anywhere with it because I was too tall. So.....I started looking for something else. As it turned out, I was at a local fair and there was a Kenpo demo. going on. It was a man and a WOMAN........which at that time (80's) I didn't see a lot of females in the martial arts and I thought that was cool. Decided maybe I could do this too......so I went to their class. Been hooked ever since- Kenpo has become my addiction.

I was fascinated by the martial arts my whole life. I had been leading a very unhealthy lifestyle and I decided it was time to clean up and grow up. But I needed some way to get exercise that included some mental stimulation. Going to the gym for me was like riding a giant hamster wheel, too mindless for my liking.
Anyway I decided to give MA a try so I signed up for a TKD trial lesson. Two days before my trial I walked into a Kenpo school. I spoke with the Instructor for about 15 minutes and after hearing the description of Kenpo I signed up on the spot, went home and cancelled the TKD lesson.
