Default Best Video Series: Tatum or Speakman?

I am looking for a reference library that has the techniques as taught by SG Ed Parker. Larry Tatum has a nice series of videos, but they are very short. It takes 2 videos for most of the belts. Of course, Mr. Tatum's videos have the techniques as taught by SG Parker.

Jeff Speakmans videos are newer and have a higher production value. He also puts all of the techniques for each belt onto a single video. However, some of the techniques have been changed (this is both good and bad, depending upon your point of view).

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

For background purposes, I have my 1st Black Belt in Shaolin Kenpo. Shaolin Kenpo is the art of GG Ralph Castro who was also a student of William KS Chow. I am very interested in completing my Kenpo education by learning American Kenpo.

I like the Tatum video set, but Speakman's is alot easier to learn from.
Tatum doesn't really break down the techniques. He does however answer just about every email.

Event though Mr. Tatum does have short DVD's as you have said. To compare the two I would have to say that Mr. Tatum is the closest thing to what Mr. Parker wanted.

I am still waiting for him to answer my email that I sent him a few months ago.

    Brian,

I guess that it dapends on how much you care about tradition. Remember!

"Tradition has much to teach us however it must serve our need and not let it become our Master" "Martial Arts is an ever growing form, There will always be rom for improvement".

With that in mind i would make my choice. I have most of Master Tatums tapes and they are very good, however we have chosen to modify many techniques as many of the moves were redundunant. We felt no need to continue a technique after the opponent was disposed of. Yes,that is breaking tradition.

I guess I would order a couple of each and see what i liked and then order the complete set. If you like The Speakman tapes then I would go with them and worry about tradition later.

    Good luck with your choice!

Well, as much as I like Mr. Speakman, I have to say that Tatum's videos are better as far as the explanation.

It could be because I'm more used to them, but I have found more than a few of the techniques unclear on the 5.0 ones. He does some things I like very much, like the words on the screen, but I would've liked to see him spend more time explaining the techniques. And there's no explanation of the katas and set at all.

I think Mike Lambert's (www.mlkka.org) are also outstanding. I like to bounce back and forth between Tatum's and Lambert's because they have very different teaching styles and bring attention to different aspects of the techniques.

Although Larry Tatum adheres to the 154 technique system, complete with all 96 extensions, and all forms and sets, he continues to EVOLVE. His Kenpo just gets better and better and he can show you a zillion different new and innovative ways to make a given technique work.

True. I remember one seminar when we were doing a two-man attack and he looks over at us and says, "Why are you doing you hand like that? That doesn't work." Then we looked at each other and mumbled to each other that that's what was in the videos. lol

The videos were done years ago. He'd come up with something better since then.
