Hi,
While waiting to be verified so I could post, I've been reading the various forums, it seems like a pretty informative community.
Some background, way "back in the day" (high school/college) I achieved a blue belt in Tang Soo Do. I sort of fell out of the art when I moved to Florida and got a job, and never really got back into it. Now, older and wiser (and fatter and slower, unfortunately) I've been bit again by the bug, since my daughter started taking Kenpo classes. I'm seriously considering trying out the IKCA video tapes, even though the curriculum will be different.
Anyway, that's my story...

Hey jds
GLAD TO HAVE YOU at KenpoTalk!!!!
I'm glad that the bug bit you again!!
I've got a few questions, if I may...
If I understand correctly, your daughter is in a Kenpo school, correct?
If so, why not just join up in her school? IF it's an IKCA affiliated school, then it would be handy to access those tapes also, but NOTHING beats actually going to a school and having an instructor fine-tune what you're doing in person in real time. (((please note: NOT coming down on "video" anything, just think it's a truth that nothing beats person to person instruction, regardless of system)))
I studied Tae Kwan Do Moo Duk Kwan, a brother art to Tang Soo Do, so I know where you're coming from. There's a big difference in how even the rudimentary fundamentals are executed in Kenpo however. That's another big reason I'd suggest actually attending classes.
ALSO: You mentioned feeling older and fatter/slower...
I know the feeling!![]()
That's just another fine reason to get to a school and WORK OUT. Let the instructors PUSH ya.... it's good stuff!
So....
whadaya think??
Have a good one man. Make good use of KenpoTalk. No matter your particular Kenpo flavor, we got ALL the goods here!
so, enjoy.........

I completely agree on the benefits of actual instructor time. Right now I'm fighting schedule issues in my life, I just have no time left it seems. Hopefully things will settle down at some point in the near future and I'll be able to do that.
My daughter's dojo is actually in Coconut Grove, however the instructor teaches some classes in Broward for kids. I'm not sure when the adult classes are, but I think they're down at the Miami location, which makes it even harder to get to.
It will be interesting to see the fundamental differences between Kenpo and TSD...I can already see some of them from watching the kids class and from reading here. I don't think my TSD class was completely traditional however...the instructor there had little interest in the sort of "show kicking" that you often see associated with Tae Kwan Do, etc (no offense intended to TKD practitioners, I know you could all kick my butt!) and he spent a lot of time teaching self defense techniques, which strikes me as unexpectedly similar to Kenpo. He was also a Judo and Aikido guy though, so he rolled up a lot of things into his teaching.

Even if you could only get with Martin once a week it would be well worth it. I've had a few opportunities to train with him and he's extremely knowledgeable.

As an afterthought:
If you're serious about IKCA training you should check into attending Kenpo in the Carolinas this year.
If you're interested, check under "Events" for details.
I will be there, as will Martin, and hopefully Carol. Mr. Parsons is hosting the event and Vic LeRoux will also be there along with some other very talented instructors.
