This is Scoce.. just wanted to drop in and say Hi. I had an introduction to Kenpo in high school for a short time and have been wanting to continue for over a decade now. I'm fixing to move to a city that has several instructors and I'm very eager to start my kenpo journey. Any advice to a total newbie would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure yet who to study with. I was considering Gary Swan's studio in Universal City. I'm just eager to get started. I move to San Antonio in about 3 weeks.

Thanks all for responding! I do have a question though... is there an organization that is trying to unify all the different systems that claim to be teaching Ed Parker's Kenpo? I remember reading on-line about the Kenpo Senior Council a long while ago, but information about that has somehow vanished. Does it still function? Thanks in advance!

Thanks all for your warm welcome. Disregard my question... there is so much information on this site if you dig for it. = )
I'm still in the researching stage as far as schools go. I'll let you know what I finally choose. If anyone has information about kenpo in San Antonio please feel free to share.
Advice?
#1: Get to class Early, stay late, don't miss any if you can help it.
#2: Work all the Kenpo you can every chance you get!
#3: LISTEN to your instructor and ask questions like crazy.
#4: Keep coming to KenpoTalk, contribute....add to the discussions and ASK ASK ASK questions. ((But never let it come between what you're own instructor says is THE right way for you! Just like in high-school..... dance with the one that brung ya.))
WELCOME to Kenpo Talk!!!!!!!
come often
enjoy MUCH

Welcome to the forum.
I'm trying to remember the name of a good Kenpo instructor I've heard about in San Antonio (I grew up about 200 miles south of there).
I believe his name is Mr. Abernathy. But I might be mistaken.
Please let us know who you wind up training with.

Hi Scoce, & a belated welcome to the site. I'm also in TX, and know of a few schools in the Austin/San Antonio area. Don't know if you want to commute to Austin (just kidding!), but in addition to the advice Brother John & others have given, I would tell you this: think about what you expect to get from the training, what kind of an instructor you want (traditional style vs. non-traditional style), and visit as many different schools as you can. Although they're all "Kenpo" each has a different flavor & you need to find the one that fits you & what you want to get out of the Art.
Just my opinion; Good Luck with the search & Best Wishes on your Kenpo journey!
Sincerely,
Gin-Gin![]()
