Cool Saying Hello from Los Angeles

Hello everyone, my name is Rick, and I'm new to KenpoTalk... well actually I've been signed up for a while but this is the first time I've contributed a post. So, on to my MA history...

My first taste of MA came at age 5. My mom stuck me in a Judo class at the local Y. I got tossed around and slammed a lot, and after only two classes, I wanted to quit, and my mom let me.

Fast forward 10 years... age 15, one day riding the public bus home from school, I was jumped by a gang banger from a rival high school. I was afraid to fight back, because his 3 buddies would have jumped in as well, so I let this guy beat me down. My so-called best friend didn't help me, and no one else helped me either. I learned that day that I can only depend on myself, so I HAD to learn how to fight.

At age 17 I signed myself up in a hybrid self defense system (techniques from Kung Fu, TKD, Aikido and Jujutsu). Two years later, after much study and dedication, I had earned my black belt, and even had defended myself in several streetfights.

Fast forward 13 years... now at age 33, I'm a father of a 10-year-old boy, and I put him in an American Kenpo school in Long Beach back in September '05. He's taken off with that, currently is an orange belt and even started competing in and winning tournaments (something I never did because my main focus was just self defense). So the bug bit me to get back into serious training.

I started in July '06 training in a small American Kenpo class here in LA, Victory Karate. So far I've earned my yellow belt in November and am close to being ready to test for orange. I also plan to start competing in some tournaments this year.

I signed up for KenpoTalk because I was really looking for a credible and enlightening source for all things EPAK. Kenpo really is as much mental as it is physical, so I'm looking forward to picking the brains of all of you, to help me in my studies and get different perspectives on ideas and methods.

And that's my journey... so far.

    Welcome sir!

Good for you getting back involved again...

I have heard it said that families that Kenpo/Kempo together, stay together! LOL
The above is just my opinion.
