    Default Hello everyone

I have been a member at MartialTalk for about a year and know some of you from there, but others here are new to me. I have finally gotten active here on KenpoTalk, and wanted to say hi to everyone.

My training in the martial arts began with Tracy kenpo, about 22 years ago. In more recent years I have been mostly training in other arts, but try to keep some connection to my kenpo. I'm always looking for ways to learn and see what I do in a new light, and am looking forward to the discussions that take place here.

    Hi Michael,

    Glad to have you.

Who did you train under in Kenpo?

    Hi Amy,

My teachers were not famous people. My first instructor, James Johnson, is listed as second dan in Tracy's organization. He moved away and his student, John Molitor took over the instruction. John has never been formally a part of Tracys organization, and neither have I. Our ranking is only our own and we are happy with that. We are independents, I guess. I have lost touch with James, but I keep in touch with John. John doesn't teach anymore, and as far as I know James doesn't either, and it was a small school in Wisconsin, with just a few students at any given time. James taught in his living room, and John taught in a converted garage.

Nothing wrong with those trainng environments. I would rather have quality training than a fancy facility.

I agree. To tell the truth, I like being an independent. Literally, I do what I want. I have made extensive changes in how I practice my kenpo that seem to work better for me. This is based on my experiences with other martial arts and my own insights and my own common sense. I generally consult with John about what I am doing, but when push comes to shove I make my own decisions, and John respects that. I don't have to clear anything with a parent organization, or anything like that. We see it as simply being responsible for ourselves. It's pretty liberating.

You might want to contact Sigung86 here on KenpoTalk he has great insight into the Tracy techniques and is not tied down by political affiliations.

Yes, Sigung86 and I have discussed this on Martialtalk. I think he and I have a pretty similar perspective. It's nice to run into people who have been thinking along similar lines.
