    Default Master Dan Babcock

    Hello everyone:

Just curious because I'm trying to trace my Kenpo roots back to their origins. I have been stumped recently, as I believe my instructor's, instructor's, instructor was Master Dan Babcock. Unfortunately, I can find little on him with the exception that he was promoted through the Tracy Kenpo system; he is listed on their site, but there is little to be found on the man himself - even through an internet search. I seem to remember that he was involved in some sort of controversy, but I can't remember what it was. I'm not looking to open a bashing thread if he was, I am just trying to trace the Kenpo roots.

Any information on a Master Babcock family tree (if one exists) would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to post your question over at the San Jose kenpo forum. It's a Tracy's kenpo forum:

I have heard the name, but that is about all I know.

I studied directly under Dan Babcok in the '70s. I only got as far as green belt, and left the school soon after that.

Here is the lineage that I was aware of at that time-

When I left the school, Dan Babcock was a third degree black belt. The people that he promoted to black belt (these are just the ones I knew directly) are-
    Nick Vales
    Roland Roemer
    John Hughes
    Greg Mattson
    Jim Thomas
    Ray Pohl
    Marland Johnson

These are in no particular order. Hope this info helps.

    Dan

I studied under Ray Pohl at his Oak Forest and Evergreen Park Illinois schools from 88-92. Rob Skoda was also one of Dan Babcock's black belts and was an instructor at the school at that time. By the time I got there, Marland Johnson had moved on to other things and I saw him in the school only once. Dan Babcock was also retired by then and I also only met him once. At that point in time, these are the ranks they acheived:

    Dan Babcock: 7th degree
    Ray Pohl: 4th degree
    Rob Skoda: 3rd degree
    Marland Johnson: 3rd degree

I hope this helps (and gets to you - I'm now I'm late to the party!)

Sorry nothing to add, but a question on your screen name. Is it HAMA as in Hartwhich Academy of Martial Arts? If so I have a friend that trained there and recieved a black belt in what later was called hama-ryu.
