Default Sparring in the Tracy's system

I'm fairly new to Kenpotalk, so if this is a old subject please forgive me. In my home town I have talked to two Tracy kenpoists that said they do not spar because it is not in the Tracy system. Now the one guy has his Black Belt and claims from white to black he never even sparred once, just wanted to know is that only in some Tracy schools, and why ?

Good question Scott. I know that there are some really tough Tracy Kenpo guys that are great at sparring, but I also know of MANY Tracy Kenpo schools that put LITTLE to NO emphasis on sparring.

Bottom line -without sparring, you are over-ranked and hold a false sense of security about your self-defense skills.

It often comes down to personal preferrence of the instructor. The great sparring debate has occurred on many a forum, and it will be interesting to see what everyone's opinion will be here on KenpoTalk.

It's in the system all right, but I've never known anyone who doesn't spar.

I agree with what Rob Broad said - it's really based on instructor preference. But, I need to say, of 6 different Tracy Clubs that I am aware, none do sparring regularly, and 4 of 6 NEVER spar.

I asked my Tracys Instructor about sparring and he said " if we the student's want it then we have to pay for the Insurance ourself. Till then he won't offer it" because he doesen't want to pay for the Insurance for sparring and he has no interest in it..

    Yikes!

While I've heard of kenpo schools that seldom spar, I've never heard of a kenpo school that doesn't spar. I certainly don't think it is a "Tracy" thing, at least not historically. Maybe it is a modern day business practice, if so that would be sad.

For our studio, we devote roughly a third of our training time to sparring, we just view sparring as an attribute builder that you won't get with other training methods. Oh yeah, and its fun.

As Mr. Miyagi once said, "Danielson....either you do karate yes or you do karate no; you do karate guess-so, get squashed like grape".

There's a lot of truth to that.

Amen. I have never been in a kenpo school that does not spar. I have heard of it. Attendance is often "iffy" but it is there for those who want it. In my school, we also offer free "private" sparring sessions for those who can't make the classes. Just pick an instructor and set up a time...

    Hi Dave,

Do you think that regular sparring attendance should be mandatory for rank advancement?

    Thanks in advance.

Actually, we don't require sparring, but nobody who makes it to orange belt doesn't spar.

We are the same way. I don't require, though it is highly recommended. Those that succeed spar. I am not sure if sparring aids in the success, or whether those of the mindset to endure sparring also have the mindset to finish the course.

What happens when you want to spar and your Instructor doesen't offer it and he say if you want it then pay the extra insurance for it, then he'll offer it..Till then he wants no part of it, Because he doesen't have any interest in it..

If I was in a studio that didn't offer sparring I would hook up with like-minded fellow students and do a little backyard brawlin'. I would also find sparring partners outside of the studio. I live in BFE Wyoming and I know I can find a boxing club and guys interested in MMA around the town(s). I can find a couple of TKD guys that aren't happy that their club doesn't spar, or that they don't have anyone at their level to play with.

    Options are out there.

I agree I would work on getting together with a few other students and try sparring. I would definitely try to find someone that has some experience in sparring to walk you through the basics and the rules.

I would also start off slowly and softly and build up to full speed and good power. As the body becomes more adept at sparring you will enjoy it more.

Lastly I reccommend using safety gear, gloves, boots, headgear, groin protection, and mouth guard. You might even look into shin and fore arm protection. Injuries can really put a damper on training.

It also helps with overcoming the fear of getting hit......it totally sucks the first few times when you get your bell rung and your just sort of standing there wondering what the heck happened, while the other guy gets a few more shots in.
