    Default New 10th degrees

I did, thanks! I looked at the list several times thinking I was one down.

Yes, Mark Miller is one of the new Tracy judans.

    Tom Kelly was promoted posthumously.

That's so funny I was thinking when I saw the list Mark Miller has been at it forever so he is probably a tenth already.

I am sure that these are the best people in the system. And so many of them. They must have a high amount of long term dedicated students and even better teachers to reach this high level of quality in such a quantity. That's quite impressive.

Don't you need to be 3 ranks higher?
But I guess a board of 10th degrees (I guess these people listed above are not the first to be promoted to 10th) should do fine.

In Judo, the 10th is even given out by people that don't have a 10th. Right now there are only 3 living 10th degree black belts in Judo. In 2006 the Kodokan awarded the 10th to Toshiro Daigo, Ichiro Abe and Yoshimi Osawa. This were the most promotions made to judan at one time, and the first in 22yrs.

That's why the high level of skill in the above mentioned persons is really outstanding. In that promotion they promoted almost as many people to judan, as the Kodokan has been able to produce since it's founding in 1882 / 1884 (depending on what you consider to be the founding momemt).

When you've been running your own system for 50+ years, you can pretty much promote whoever you want!
Be careful what you say, some may take it the wrong way.

I'd bet money that kenpo has more 10th degrees than any other martial art. And that's all I will say about that for now...

    A VERY good question sir.

    Only 18?
That's an impressive number. There are martial arts that have been around longer, and have not yet managed to get into the double digits. Take a look at JKA shotokan for example.

I think it's a remarkable feat, that they managed to produce so many high level black belts in such a short period of time.

    The sarcasm is duly noted.

1st, to question the fact that there are 10ths by stating that there were only 7ths when Parker died, without first questioning...never mind.

The same way everyone has achieved rank since rank began.

In this case, each of these men have a certificate signed by the head of the system.

What it speaks to is Al Tracy's lack of ego, his respect for these men that have been with him as students, friends, and colleagues for 50 years, and his acknowledgement of their skills and accomplishments over those years.

This has been in the works for at least 14 years (that's when Mr. Tracy told me about it) and in doing so, Mr. Tracy hopes to avoid the fighting and politics that are still occurring in EPAKK nearly 25 years after the death of Ed Parker.

Nobody will run to Mrs. Tracy claiming anything. Mr. Tracy's opinion of his top people is documented with his signature and witnessed by hundreds.

The original plan was for 12. Two have died, Dick Willet and Tom Kelly. We live in a large country and most of us now have access to a 10th that is within a day or less of driving.

I am appreciative. Al Tracy has answered the question that nobody wants to ask, "What happens to us, the students, if you die? Where so we go to continue?"

For most of us, the answer, now, is nothing will change.
