    3. How to readily convert from a strike with the front portion of the fist to strikes with other portions of the fist.

    4. How to attack Height, Width, and Depth Zones.

    5. "Where linear moves end, circular moves begin".

    6. How to strike with the same weapon to the side as well as the front.

    7. How to strike simultaneously with both hands.

    NOTES ON STRIKE SET

    1. When practicing, be sure to maintain the proper dimensions of your horse stance.

    2. Practice this set with weights.

    3. Be sure to Pronounce Your Moves when first learning this set.

    4. Remember too, that "Slow Moves eliminate bad habits".

    5. Study various breathing patterns during this set.

    6. Convert your fists into other useful weapons.

    7. Practice this set with various rhythmic timings.

    8. Have a partner stand in front of you as a target.

    9. Now have your partner block all your strikes.

    10. Now have your partner place the palm of his hands on your fists and provide varying degrees of resistance to your strikes.

    11. Again with your partner's palms on your fists, have him follow the paths of your strikes maintaining the same amount of pressure throughout your motions, both forward and reverse.

    12. Again with your partner, work the set from fighting stances. Eventually let your work become a freestyle session.

    13. From a horse stance have your partner defend against your set of movements utilizing Star Block.

    STRIKE SET

The obvious street implication of The Striking Set is an indicator of the effectiveness of the principle of VARIABLE EXPANSION in actual combat. To gain a reasonable understanding of the concept, we will expand on the set from a semi-freestyle format in stages of development that will allow you to more completely conceptualize the inherent concept of GASEOUS EXPANSION.

    BACK-FIST TO THE FACE

You and your training partner assume a left to left on guard position at “hands” distance.

    STAGE 1: VARIABLE EXPANSION

    1. Execute a right reverse punch toward the body of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward/downward block (Alternating Maces.)

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right Back-fist back toward yourself and over the top clockwise back to your opponents bridge of nose as your “CHECKING” hand POSITIONAL CHECKS at your right shoulder.

    3. As your Back-fist strike REBOUNDS, cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

Note: This is a very good time to start experiencing and exploring the limits of your sensitivity to your opponents movements, whether on offense or defense. “FEEL” the intensity of your opponent as he blocks or attacks. “FEEL” how much energy he has allotted to the maneuver. Ask yourself the questions, Is he really trying to hit me, or is he setting me up for a trap or manipulation. Being able to effectively “READ” your opponents body will help you to know how to respond and to adjust your level of destruction as an advanced kenpoist should be able to do. Endeavor, in this exercise to not use your off hand to assist you.

    STAGE: 2: CONTROL MAINTENANCE

    1. Execute a right reverse punch toward the body of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward/downward block (Alternating Maces.)

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right back-fist back toward yourself as your “CHECKING HAND” SLAP-CHECKS and therefore momentarily “TRAPS” or controls of the blocking hand as you continue your back-fist over the top clockwise back to your opponents bridge of nose.

    3. As your Back-fist strike REBOUNDS, cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

Note: as you see, when exercises start to take on a degree of reality, terms like “positional check” become obsolete in many instances. Explore the timing factor of your CONTROL MAINTENANCE SLAP-CHECK to coincide with what would normally be just a bare SLAP-CHECK to your shoulder executed with a back-fist. The implication and timing of these Slap-checks as performed in earlier more rudimentary classes can now be brought to fruition in practical simultaneously offensive or defensive execution.

    STAGE 3: CONTROL RELEASE

    1. Execute a right reverse punch toward the body of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward/downward block (Alternating Maces.)

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right back-fist back toward yourself as your “CHECKING HAND” SLAP-CHECKS and grabs his forearm or wrist and therefore momentarily “TRAPS” or maintains control of the blocking hand, “JERKING” diagonally down and out to control height, width, and depth as you continue your back-fist over the top clockwise back to your opponents bridge of nose.

    3. As your back-fist strike REBOUNDS, “JERK” his arm as you CONTROL RELEASE and cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

Note: Once again timing plays a major part in execution of the drill. Explore the different effects on you opponent when you utilize MARRIAGE OF GRAVITY by push-dragging on your back-fist.. Change the timing and do the same on your grabbing SLAP-CHECK effectively turning it into a strike to a point on his forearm. Change the timing once again, and put the energy at the end of the technique when your “JERK” his arm on your cross out when your right foot hits the ground.

    STAGE 4: CONTROL MANIPULATION

    1. Execute a right reverse punch toward the body of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward/downward block (Alternating Maces.)

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right back-fist back toward yourself as your “CHECKING HAND” SLAP-CHECKS and grabs his wrist and therefore “TRAPS” and maintains control of the blocking hand, “JERKING” diagonally down and out to control height, width, and depth as you STEP-THROUGH in front of your opponent on your back-fist. When you grab his wrist you’ll notice his thumb is (more or less) pointed upwards.

    3. Immediately after stepping through on your back-fist, with your “trapping hand” braced against your body, roll his baby finger edge upward as you continue to elongate his arm and continue the BODY BRACE.

    4. Immediately drop your back-fist hand downward and drop your arm-pit on top and back of his TRICEP TENDON as you pull up slightly on his trapped hand and drop into a SQUATTING HORSE STANCE.

    5. If your opponent is not in a ONE POINT STANCE, employ a SUB-LEVEL 4 BUMP and take your opponent to a PIN or LOCK.

Note: When dropping the arm pit on the tricep tendon, the destructive potential of the technique can be raised considerably by the degree and aggressive nature of the pull on his arm upward by your “TRAPPING” hand.

    UNDERHAND HAMMER-FIST

You and your training partner assume a right to left on guard position at “hands” distance.

    STAGE 1: VARIABLE EXPANSION

    1. Execute a right “JABBING” straight punch toward the head of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward block .

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right forward inverted hammer-fist to your opponents groin as your “CHECKING” hand POSITIONAL CHECKS at your right shoulder.

    3. As your hammer-fist strike REBOUNDS, cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

    STAGE: 2: CONTROL MAINTENANCE

    1. Execute a right “JABBING” straight punch toward the head of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward block .

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right forward inverted hammer-fist to your opponents groin as your “CHECKING” hand SLAP-CHECKS and therefore “TRAPS” or maintains momentarily control of the blocking hand. Time your strike to coincide with your WHOLE BEAT TIMING SLAP-CHECK.

    3. As your hammer-fist strike REBOUNDS, cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

Note: Alter your timing of your “OFF” hand. Begin to understand the importance of WHOLE BEAT TIMING and discover how SLAP-CHECKS compliment your action even if they are moving with your strike instead of opposing it. What is QUARTER-BEAT TIMING.

    STAGE 3: CONTROL RELEASE

    1. Execute a right “JABBING” straight punch toward the head of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward block .

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right forward inverted hammer-fist to your opponents groin as your “CHECKING” hand SLAP-CHECKS and grabs his wrist and therefore momentarily “TRAPS” or maintains control of the blocking hand, “JERKING” diagonally down and out to control height, width, and depth.

    3. As your back-fist strike REBOUNDS, “JERK” his arm as you CONTROL RELEASE and cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

Note: The base drill is QUARTER BEAT TIMING. Recognize it. Once again timing plays a major part in execution of the drill. Explore the different effects on you opponent when you utilize MARRIAGE OF GRAVITY by push-dragging on your hammer-fiat. Change the timing and do the same on your grabbing SLAP-CHECK effectively turning it into a strike to a point on his forearm. Change the timing once again, and put the energy at the end of the technique when your “JERK” his arm on your cross out when your right foot hits the ground. Using CONTROL MAINTENANCE with your forearm, hyper-extending his arm.

    STAGE 4: CONTROL MANIPULATION

    1. Execute a right “JABBING” straight punch toward the head of your opponent. Your opponent blocks with his lead hand executing an inward block .

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you drop your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right forward inverted hammer-fist to your opponents groin as your “CHECKING” hand SLAP-CHECK ATTACKS and grabs his wrist and therefore momentarily “TRAPS” the blocking hand, “JERKING” diagonally down and out to control height, width, and depth .

    3. As your back-fist strike REBOUNDS, “JERK” his arm as your right arm REBOUNDS and CONTOUR CIRCLES on top of his extended arm and executes a TAKE-DOWN by hyper-extension through pressure or back forearm strike at the TRICEP TENDON.

    4. If your opponent is not in a ONE POINT STANCE, execute a SUB-LEVEL FOUR BUMP and take your opponent to a PIN.

Note: Once again, it’s important to rotate his baby finger edge upward to allow for the hyper-extension of the arm.

    INVERTED ROUNDHOUSE

You and your training partner assume a left to left on guard position at “hands” distance.

    STAGE 1: VARIABLE EXPANSION

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you withdraw your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right hand into an inward inverted roundhouse punch to the base of the head as your “CHECKING” hand POSITIONAL CHECKS at your right shoulder.

    3. Cross and cover out with your right foot to 6 o’clock.

    STAGE 2: CONTROL MAINTENANCE

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you withdraw your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right hand into an inward inverted roundhouse punch to the base of the head as your “CHECKING” hand slap-checks attacks his forearm to control his width.

    3. Cross and cover out with your right foot to 6 o’clock.

Note: You should recognize this particular drill requires the use of QUARTER-BEAT TIMING in relation to your strikes. Here is a clue to the timing questions you have. In this instance the count is, 1: your punch, 2: your withdrawal, 3: your SLAP-CHECK ATTACK, 4: your counter-punch. This works very well and a properly executed SLAP-CHECK takes on the properties of an offensive maneuver.

    STAGE 3: CONTROL RELEASE

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you withdraw your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right hand into an inward inverted roundhouse punch to the base of the head as your “CHECKING” hand SLAP-CHECK ATTACKS and grabs his wrist and therefore momentarily “TRAPS” the blocking hand, “JERKING” diagonally down and out to control height, width, and depth.

    3. Execute a right cross as you “JERK” his arm to disturb his balance and release his arm as you cover out.

Note: Utilize the energy in your cross to add back up mass to your strike. WHOLE BEAT TIMING.

    STAGE 4: CONTROL MANIPULATION

    3. Execute a right cross as you “JERK” his arm to disturb his balance and drop your arm pit on his Tricep Tendon to force a THREE POINT STANCE. Reach with you right hand and counter-grab his trapped hand. Step out with your left foot and step through reverse with your right foot and execute a WRIST-FLEX THROW.

    4. Take your opponent to a face down ONE POINT STANCE and impose a simple lock or PIN.

Note: There are two (2) actions taking place here. Your attack/counter and your throw. Both of these major actions imploy a form of QUARTER-BEAT TIMING. Where’s the BEAT?

    LOOPING HAMMER-FIST

You and your training partner assume a left to left on guard position at “hands” distance.

    STAGE 1: VARIABLE EXPANSION

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you withdraw your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right hand into an inward Hammer-fist to the kidneys as your “CHECKING” hand POSITIONAL CHECKS at your right shoulder.

    3. As your hammer-fist strike REBOUNDS, cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

    STAGE 2: CONTROL MAINTENANCE

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you withdraw your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right hand into an inward Hammer-fist to the kidney as your “CHECKING” hand SLAP-CHECK ATTACKS his forearm to control his width.

    3. Cross and cover out to 6 o’clock.

Note: Explore the QUARTER-BEAT TIMING of this action. Then see if you can insert a SLAP-CHECK at you shoulder on the WHOLE-BEAT strike.

    STAGE 3: CONTROL RELEASE

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    2. As your opponent blocks your forearm, point your elbow and shoulder toward him as you withdraw your hand “RIDING” his block and “ROLLING” your right hand into an inward Hammer-fist to the kidney as your “CHECKING” hand SLAP-CHECK ATTACKS and grabs his wrist and therefore momentarily “TRAPS” the blocking hand, “JERKING” diagonally down and out to control height, width, and depth.

    3. Execute a right cross as you “JERK” his arm to disturb his balance and release his arm as you cover out.

Note: Notice the similarity of these motions to techniques you’ve learned. Once again QUARTER-BEAT TIMING is evident.

    STAGE 4: CONTROL MANIPULATION

    3. Execute a right cross over as you “JERK” his arm to disturb his balance and drop your arm pit on his Tricep Tendon as you turn his baby finger edge upward and lift with your left hand. Continue to wrap your right arm around his bicep as you hyper-extend his arm. Execute a right cross over but instead of planting the foot, “FALL” on his shoulder PINNING it to the ground as you continue to lift and BRACE his arm to force a ONE-POINT STANCE.

    COMBINATION STRIKES

You and your opponent face each other in a left to left on guard position

    SET CLOSE:

    1. Execute a right step through punch to your opponents head. Your opponent blocks your right punch with his lead hand inward block.

    3. As your back-fist rebounds from your opponents head, circle back into an inward parry checking off the trapped arm, and explode an underhand hammer-fist to the groin. Withdraw your hammer-fist as if you are throwing a backward elbow, and loop a roundhouse to the base of the head. Continue punching through the head and loop an Over-head Hammer-fist to the kidney area.

    4. Execute the TAKE-DOWN and PIN of your choice.

Note: the name of the game is continuity tempered with effectiveness. Also Take note of and explain the QUARTER-BEAT TIMING in these movements. Now that we’ve completed the base sequence, it is time to formulate on all the MANIPULATION stages. Let’s see what you come up with.
