    Talking some completely different videoclip

    Hi All,

Here's a video that's not so much about Kenpo, but it does involve kenpoists !!

In august 2004 my wife and I stayed in a Shaoling Wushu school in Zhengzhou, China for three weeks of training (6 hours a day, 6 days a week). In this clip you'll see the form we learned.

And please don't hesitate to leave your feedback here or on Youtube!!!

    Wow what a great opportunity!

Since I don't know the form I can not comment on it but looks like you two trained hard.

    Thanks for sharing.

Different, but interesting. You guys stayed together really well too.

I'm with Crippler that I can't comment on the form itself because I don't know anything about it, but it's interesting.

    Thanks for sharing it.

I agree, what an opporunity to go back to the roots! Did you take a daily journal or anything so the lessons you learned stay fresh? Care to share some of those?

Cool Re: some completely different videoclip

Sorry for replying late, but I hadn't subscribed ro replies, so I just now noticed there were any.

If these are what you call low stances, you haven't seen the Chinese themselves. They tend to go way deeper then we did.

I sure was a great opportunity to go to the roots of our art. We had a great experience although a little too short (only three weeks).

I did keep a diary of what we did, and I still have to process it for digital publication (and have to translate it, since it's in Dutch of course). It will be on my website soon and I'll let y'all know when it's there.

    Thanks for the kind words,
    Marcel

What an awesome experience it must have been. Was this an organized tour or did you put the trip together yourself?

I thought you two did a great job on the form. It must have been tough to switch gears and try to move less like a kenpoist and more like a kung fu artist.

Talking Re: some completely different videoclip

This tour was not organised. I got the e-mail adress from the Sifu that appeared in the videoclip form a German guy who had been there. People from the school picked us up at Zhengzhou airport and that's where it began.

Surely in the beginning it was hard to stop moving in a Kenpo way, but pretty soon you get used to stances lower than a wide kneel .

After three weeks of training we went to Xian by train to see the Terracotta Army (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terracotta_Army) and from there again by train to Beijing for more sight seeing.

I'd love to go back for more, but now that I'm gonna be a father in a few months, I'm afraid there won't be an opportunity very soon.

What an awesome experience to go to the roots of Martial Arts. We are all very envious of you. I have allways wondered how one of us would be treated there? It appears very well. Did you have to use an interpreter?
I am assuming they spoke only Chinese. Did it appear that they respected your training? A lot of these things I have always wondered about.

We were treated very well overthere. They don't pay much attention to your previous training, although I was asked to perfrom one of our forms for the group, so that they could see what I did and what the difference was.

An interpreter was not neccesary, because the instructors of the foreign groups all thought they spoke English ;-) In reality they wasn't that much English in that, but just enough to understand what they meant. A lot of the learning was done by example anyway, so it didn't matter that much.

Outside the school nobody spoke any English at all, so that was quite a different experience, to have to make yourself clear using hands and feet insteed of speech.

An experience however, I wouldn't want to have missed!!

It's funny that this thread should re-emerge... as I had recently seen this video of Marcel on YT... and meant to post on KT... as I remembered he was a Member here...

Yes, envious is not even close to the words I'd use... to stand withing the walls of the actual Shaolinsi (well, at least the "newer" one) is a life-long dream of mine... and it WILL happen before I die...

Although my European Travels were l-o-n-g ago (age 8)... I enjoyed immensly all of Belgium and your country of Holland, Marcel. Having gone at tulip time... it was truly a vision!

Gouda (properly pronounced Howda) was amongst my favorite places. Holland is another place I'll see again...

Good stuff, Marcel! By the way, you mentioned 3-months ago about becoming a new Dad... how's that going? Did the Turkey pop yet?

    Hey there!

Glad to hear the day is approaching!

Yes, if I do make it iver there (or you here)... we should definatly get a workout in!

By the way, have you progressed at all in getting the journal of your China experiences up online as of yet? That'd be fun to read!

    Andrew

P.S. Do you still have Wimpy's Hamburgers stores over there... from Popeye character?

I'm sorry to say no progress at all yet, I just returned fomr the Florida Camp, and am busy getting back to work now.

Although I do remember the Wimpy burger chain, I really don't remember how long they've been gone, but it must be more than 10 years.
