Lightbulb What do you look for in a youtube video?

As some of you know I will be starting a weekly (hopefully) youtube channel on

American Kenpo Concepts and Principles. I wanted to get some input

before filming as to create the best content possible.

What do you like about your favorite youtube channels/videos?

What keeps you coming back to that particular channel/contributor?

What do you look for in instructional videos?

How Long/Short should each segment be?

Or any other comments and suggestions you guys might

    Hi Chris,

    I enjoy videos which are:

    - Giving clear and detailed explanations.
    - Telling me something I didn't know or didn't consider yet.
    - Entertaining (i.e. have a touch of humour).

I look forward to your series.

    1) Realistic attacks.
    2) Must be able to see entire stance (including feet) in the frame.
    3) Minimal talk, just the facts.
    4) Multiple camera angles of demonstration assuming you're editing.

All of what Bill wrote above, plus excellent execution of the movements, and realistic responses from the partner. Minimal use of jargon unless the terms are explained .

Just a tiny detail - It is easier to follow if the attacker and defender are NOT wearing the same color clothing.

Look forward to viewing your videos!

For what it's worth, one thing I always see people making negative comments on is "the video doesn't do X" or "the video doesn't take into account Y". I think a clear concise explanation of the purpose of what exactly the video/demonstration is supposed to show.
"For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer."

Yeah, not like those 2 guys that do videos who talk for most of it and say almost nothing, and then they do a horrible example of the technique, and then stand with their thumbs in their belts like they really think they're "professors." That's Fantasy Kenpo.

You'll need to be more specific. Which two guys who do that are you referring to...?

I don't want to name call, but most know who they are. They are a classic example of people brought up in a system that is devoid of mechanical basics, who have no clue what they're doing, and yet they introduce themselves as "professors" and speak with authority on 90% of their videos, before finally executing the techniques. It's not their fault. I blame the teachers first, and then the student for not asking the hard questions. Instead you pay the money and accept the belts. Funny thing I watched these guys in a technique line and nothing they talk about in techniques when they "demo" happens in a T-line, and nothing approaches anything that resembles realism. When you're in a system that promotes realism and self defense as the staple of their art, that's pretty bad.

Regardless of system I look for three things in instructional videos: Power generation, timing, percentage of accuracy.

Power generation: How is the power (force on target) being generated? That power is not just for strikes, but blocks, parries, positioning maneuvers, etc.

Timing: Is the person too soon, on-time or too late to accomplish what they want to do?

Percentage of accuracy: Is what they say they are going to do, actually being done?

When a person steps through the instruction, the above are easy to accomplaish. It's when the material is executed at speed that things sometimes begin to disintegrate.

    That's what I look for.

Usefulness of information. Can I watch the vid, head to the mat, and try it out for myself? If I get rolled for my wallet in the parking lot later that evening, can I put it to work? And, if it's kenpo, stances and transitions. They drive motion and application of the upper platform. Without them, it's all just muscling through stuff that should have body-weight behind it.
Clear mind, clear movement. Mastery of the Arts is mastery over the Self. That in this moment, this motion, the thoughts, memories, impulses and passions that cloud the mind must yield to the clarity of purpose, and purity of motion.

I thought this thread might be the best place to put this.

Bo Luellen of the Kenpo History Channel on YouTube (as well as the Bo Luellen Show on ITunes) is shutting down unless he can raise enough money to keep it going. Here is a link to his Go Fund Me page.

    https://www.gofundme.com/yz4n5dn8

Please consider giving 10 or 20 bucks to keep his show going. I've already given $20.00, I hope you can too.

His podcast interviews have been wonderful, I would hate to lose them.

    Thanks for your consideration.

Did anyone by chance copy/record some of the interviews Mr. Luellen did?
