Default May 2006 Technique of the Month - Kneel Of Compulsion

Kneel of Compulsion (Right Flank- Right Step-Through Punch)
    1. An attacker at 3 o'clock comes at you with a right step-through punch.

    2. Step your right foot to 1:30 as you execute a left inward parry to the outside of your attacker's wrist followed by a right outward parry to the outside of your attacker's right elbow.

    3. Step to 1:30 with your left foot as your right hand grabs your attacker's right shoulder. Pivot so as your left hand grabs the back of your attacker's left shoulder.

    4. Immediately step your right foot back to 1:30 into a left neutral bow as you pull with both of your arms.

    5. Execute a right step-through knife edge kick to your attacker's left knee, thus compelling him to kneel.

    6. As you land forward to 7:30 in a right neutral bow, execute a right inward elbow with a left palm strike to sandwich your attacker's head.

    7. Cross out to 3 o'clock.
    Quality outweighs quantity every time.

One of my favorites...'cause it's nasty

Our basic version is the same as yours with the exception that in step #6 we use our left to check the back of his right shoulder/tricep area to keep him from spinning too far towards us. The elbow goes to the right side of his jaw. One little "bonus shot" you can get at this point happens if he turns far enough that his head is facing us. In this case, you can elbow to the left side of his jaw and since we are checking his right shoulder, we get a neck tweak.

I also like to insert an elbow tweak by turning the first parry (with the left) into a hooking-parry so that the right parry hyperextends their elbow.

    Here is a trivia:

Kneel of Compulsion is an alternate technique to Back Breaker.

How? Do you mean "why would we do Back-breaker instead of K-Of-C?"

I would say it depends on our oponent. If we've off-balanced him with the pull in step #4 then we do K-Of-C. If he fights/resists then we hit him with the right knee in the tail-bone or small of the back to bend him back, then continue with Back-breaker.

that's all I can think of right now...I need some sleep

    Hmmm....not quite.

    The question is:

What dictates when we would use Kneel of Compulsion over the Back Breaker?

I think most Kenpoists just assume you could use either at any given time.

If you miss the shoulder grab in Back breaker you then go into K OF C or for some reason maybe on the beach your attacker is shirtless, sweaty and the shoulder grab is not easy.

This thechnique is great if you are both near a wall. If you can get him between you and the wall there is a lot more incidental damage that can be done.

For the life of me I can't stop there on this technique. All the glorious opportunities to not exercise control. More so if there's a wall behind you.

What do ya'll think of a quick right-handed eye strike to the opponent's right eye on the way in after the two parries? It's an insert we play with every now and then on both KOC and Back Breaker.

I often claw across the face with my right hand after the double parry on way the shoulder in Back breaker or on the way to the raised position on Kneel of Compulsion.

That works as he rolls with your claw to his right. I have of course, "accidently" grabbed his chin before and fulcrumed his head back as I stepped. It is always an instinctive thing and an error when I am teaching it as this lends itself more to the Backbreaker.

I like the claw to the face on Back Breaker. I remember seeing SGM Parker do it this way.
I fold an inward elbow to the ribbs after the two parries then claw across the face. Yeah, my students love my elbow inserts. HEE HEE
